Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Feb 24, 2012 2:52 am Hi, I am trying to re educate myself from "self builder" in the the UK ready to be an "owner builder" in Aus so a couple of questions: Do you have builders merchants like the UK where the trades go for their building supplies as a lot of them here cater for self builders offering discounts, credit accounts and costing services etc ? Are there national owner builder magazines featuring build projects and product reviews etc ? Are there specialist lenders for mortgage finance and if so is the build money released in stages ? Are there site insurance/building warranty providers for owner builders? What is the local goverment planning system like - how does it work ? Cheers ! Yes, Bunnings is probably the largest, they have a OB account but its a measly 5%. I get 10% from my local mitre10 just from being regular and they are pretty competitive Are there national owner builder magazines featuring build projects and product reviews etc ? Only one I'm aware of is Owner Builder magazine here in Oz, and its nothing like the ones you are used to in the UK! Are there specialist lenders for mortgage finance and if so is the build money released in stages ? Yes, I think all the big 4 banks will do construction loans, I have heard NAB are the best for OB's. Are there site insurance/building warranty providers for owner builders? Yes there are, google is your friend there, I don't know any off the top of my head. What is the local goverment planning system like - how does it work ? Every state is different. Here in NSW you need to complete a construction white card which is a one day health and safety course, and then you need to complete an owner builder course, this can be completed either online or face to face, they are pretty simple courses. Office of Fair Trading then issues a OB permit which your local council will need to see before it issues a construction certificate which allows you to start work. If your in NSW have a look at the Office of Fair Trading website, it has quite a bit of info on owner building. Cheers ! Re: Builders merchants ?? 3Feb 24, 2012 8:32 am Here in WA you to obtain your building licence you simply have to apply with a fee and they send you out your owner builders licence. Which you send in with your plans etc for council approval. Very easy, just takes time waiting for it all to get done! BLOG: thehousewebuilt2010.blogspot.com (And are still building!)
