Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Jan 28, 2012 5:33 am Hi all, I've decided to owner/build, and as this will be my first house, I qualify for the first homeowner's bonus. Usually, this is applied for when building contract is signed - at the start of the build, but for owner/builder's, it's apparently when an occupancy certificate is issued - at the end of the build. I'm a bit nervous about not checking up on this, as I don't want to build the whole thing and then find out I had to apply for the bonus anytime beforehand - and now no longer qualify! Has anyone here been in the same situation, and if so, what is your knowledge / experience of when an owner / builder applies for the first homeowner's bonus? Thanks! Re: First Home Owner's Bonus 2Jan 28, 2012 7:22 pm I would apply now & then this gets them to put in writing to you that your application has been received & will be processed once the occupancy certificate has been issued.... That way once you have it you can lodge it with a copy of your letter saying the grant will be paid on providing this document? Just a thought to try & cover all bases Re: First Home Owner's Bonus 3Jan 29, 2012 4:52 pm Thanks Pauankim - it sounds like good advice. The only thing about that is that among the documents you must submit with an owner/builder application are evidence of the date of laying the foundation and a Certificate of Occupancy. I guess that makes it pretty clear that you can only apply after the build is complete, but I am tempted to put in an application without those things just to register that I did apply, as you say - though they may well throw it straight in the bin! Thanks NativeZen! I can't wait to start landscaping, though it's going to be a while away yet. No movement on site yet as of the weekend. Hoping to see some earthworks… 3 2167 Hi folks, Victoria resident here. I've submitted my owner builder application to the VBA. I thought I'd share my experience so far.
