Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Jan 05, 2012 7:11 pm Hi Guys, I'm from Canberra and am new to this forum so please do bare with me if these questions are silly or have already been posted before =) I'm building a new house and the builder (a close friend) has stated that he will provide me with the product names and cost of materials (Taps, tiles, ovens, door handles, shower screens, lighting etc.) that he will use in the build and allow me to look for a cheaper price for the same product and then use the products i found at the cheaper price in the build. Basically the point of this thread is to share with everyone and myself the details (links, company names, etc.) and reasons why the certain supplier of the certain product is a recommended e.g. great price for same products, great service, reliabilty, delivery options etc. The below is a list of materials/products that would be great to share your suppliers and reasons for using them, please do feel free to add more if i have missed something (i'm sure there will be plenty!). Simply copy and paste the below list with or without your added material/products then add the details and reasons next to it: Roofing - Exterior Doors - Interior Doors - Windows - Curtains/Blinds - Bricks - Electricals (down lights, switches, power points, tastics etc.) - Drywalls - Plumbing - Hand rails - Tiles - Aircon/heating units - Insulation - Paint - Taps and fittings - Kitchen appliances (e.g. oven and cooktops) - Carpets - Pavers - Bathroom fittings (showers, vanities etc) - And anything else! =) Thanks guys and any input will be great! I hope this will eventually helps us all in saving money in our new builds! Cheers from Canberra =) List of suppliers for building a new house 2Feb 02, 2012 6:53 pm Hi Halfkast. Sorry to see you've had no responses thus far. Welcome to the forum BTW! Too early for me to add my two bobs worth, sorry. Would be good if this list was complete before we start though ! Re: List of suppliers for building a new house 4Feb 02, 2012 10:23 pm HI Halkfast, welcome aboard - I don't mind your concept, but I think trying to break things down so far as per your list is a bit unrealistic. eg Tiles - There must be hundreds if not thousands of variations of tiles available. What suits you wont suit the next person and so on. I do think sharing good suppliers for general building products though is well worth while. Here in Perth we have a Company called Johns Building Supplies that beats Bunnings Hands down for general building products. Same for Independent Timbers for Structural timbers etc. For Bricks we have 3 main yards to deal with, but if you hunt around there are a lot of people with "Small Builder" accounts with the main yards who can get far better pricing than you can as an OB and are happy to take a few % and keep their turnover up. But thats in Perth so wont help you much in Canberra I think your best bet is to confirm the products you are after and hunt around for the best deals with supplies near you. Even then some things are just not worth the hassle eg Cement The price is pretty much the price all over and to save $20 on a pallet of cement whilst nice isn't worth 10 phone calls either. You will soon get the feel of who is good in your area, once you have them I have found 90% of the time I go to the same suppliers time and time again as I know they price sharply and have stock. Proximity, quality and reliability of supply are also a big consideration as much as price, and remember time is money Anyway good luck with your build hope it goes well. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=44762 My Owner builder journey extending a 1930's Bungalow Anybody know any good and reasonably priced Air conditioning contractors/companies that could install a ducted air conditioning system in the Central Coast NSW for a small… 0 8996 Yes well there solution is to blame everyone else while I a 65yr old woman with major medical problems have to just continue to boil water and wash myself in a bucket… 2 16019 If you make sure all taps inside and out are turned off, what does the water meter show if you leave it for a while. 2 20235 |
