Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Nov 06, 2011 5:26 pm Hi, I'm planning to complete most of our 2nd fix myself and but am unsure about a couple of items. Our eaves are 450mm wide with the Hardiplank sheets supported between a timber support fixed to the brickwork and Colorbond fascia with timber trimmers on the sheet joins. What's the best way to secure the trimmer end without nailing or screwing through the Colorbond fascia? The other problem I've got is that some sections of the window reveals don't provide a flat surface compared to the surrounding gyprock so when I fit the architraves there will be some high points/gaps. Where the reveal is proud it can planed down to match the wall but the gaps aren't so easy. For small gaps (1-3mm) is it better to fix a small strip of timber to the reveal or is it ok to fix the architraves and fill the gap with no more gaps and paint over it? Re: 2nd Fix Questions 2Nov 07, 2011 9:55 am Hi Yetti. I assume you mean Hardi sheet not hardiplank for your eaves. The usual way to fix the eaves lining isn't as you have described. The sheet fits into a groove in the edged of the fascia and actually sits on top of the brick work at the house side. The trimmers that you use run from the side of the rafter overhang (nailed to the side of rafters) and back to the house and sit on top of the brickwork. The sheet is slid over the brickwork first and then back into the groove. The sheet doesn't get joined on a trimmer as you use a joining strip so it can be joined off trimmers. This means far less cutting of the eaves lining to get them to join on trimmers. With the architraves. If the gyprock sits out further than the architrave then you need to plane the back of the architrave out to suit. If it is only a mm or so then you may get away with it but anything more and you really need to buzz the back out where it is going to sit on the gyprock. If you dont you will have a real problem trying to get your mitres to sit nicely. Hope all that makes sense.
