Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Oct 14, 2011 1:02 pm Further to my recent thread on costings. For those who have owner built(or are in the process of owner building) can anyone provide advice on what parts of the build led to budget blowouts. I think this would benefit any owner builder who is planning this. Re: What parts of the build did the budget blowout during OB 2Oct 14, 2011 2:03 pm any part can led to blowout. Usually the blow outs are buy the owner builder getting carried away. So try not to get carrier away and increase the scope of the project to much. So you're saying that often the problem is that they want to change things, increase specs after they've started and budgeted. I guess this can be (somewhat) avoided if you have a very clear plan about what you want before you start. Easier said than done I suppose. I'm going to have mine drawn up in 3d before I start(DIY), put it on the fridge for few months, and if I still like the plan after a few months, I should like it when it's being built! Thats the plan anyway... I had everything that could open and close in our kitchen. Our bathrooms were very simple but smple costs cash ..... oh and the wooden bath! Rubbish removal ..... this costs loads Re: What parts of the build did the budget blowout during OB 5Oct 14, 2011 3:01 pm kayandandy This is where we blew out * bathroom fixtures and fittings * cabinetry * tiling This was because I chose rectified tiles and had them done floor to ceiling in five bathrooms! I know what you mean with bathrooms. In all my reno's, I found the easiest place to blow a budget is the bathroom...and you had 5 of them!! I think I only factored in 2k for rubbish removal(not including original cut fill and footings). Do you think that's enough. The more I think of it, the more I'd imagine it's not.
