Re: pad footings size 3Oct 14, 2011 6:50 am Footings size, type of cement mix, and steel within - should all be determined by an Engineer I know Clay footings are different to sand footings and even then different clays and sands should have different footings. In sand a wider footing is better than a deeper footing and so on. It also depends what loads will be exerted from above (and sideways ) If it was me I would consult an engineer who would base the footing design on the load above as well as the soil type you have on your land. The thought of making a footing bigger than it needs to be or a "one size fits all" is just a waste of time and money. As well as not being very environmentally sound (as Concrete has a lot of embodied energy in it.) Really you aim should be to have the footings as small as they can be for the job it needs to do. No more no less. As an example for my house it generally meant 350 wide x 250 deep footings with Steel reinforcing mesh and an 80-20-20 concrete mix. That is to support a Double brick constructed house on a Sandy Soil. Let the Engineer tell you what you need and maybe save you some $$ in the process (Concrete isn't cheap after all) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=44762 My Owner builder journey extending a 1930's Bungalow Dear Members I have to decide the Facade column size.
