He is a new dad so I will try to not take up too much of his time, but if he points me in the right direction hopefully the roof structure will be done by the end of January. Goal is to have the tin on and the walls external cladding installed by the end of April. Big goal is to get the gutters installed and connected to the rain water tank before it begins raining. Re: Argyle WA - Rocky Hill OB 24Dec 28, 2011 3:51 pm Looking good ChargerWA. When owner building, like you are, it's a great idea to set goals - good on you! I am watching this build with interest from now on!!! Re: Argyle WA - Rocky Hill OB 26Dec 29, 2011 4:22 pm Cheers guys. Have made a good start with the roof but this heat has chased us inside. It is over 40' at the moment. We have managed to get the entire ceiling joisted and the hips, creeper rafters and jack rafters up. Will have the ridge and common rafters done by tomorrow. Re: Argyle WA - Rocky Hill OB 27Dec 29, 2011 8:58 pm Looks great! Argyle's a nice part of the world. My grandparents had an orchard there for years so I spent many weekends and school holidays there. Re: Argyle WA - Rocky Hill OB 28Dec 31, 2011 9:56 pm Hi Zircon, Still mostly orchards around here. When we look down through the trees we look at two of them. MUST RESIST URGE TO SCRUMP........ Anyways, back to the wierdest weather, 40' Thursday, pouring with rain Friday. Had another crack at it today and have managed to fininsh the main section of the roof, just the cathedral part to go. All I am waiting on is to borrow a large scaffold for that section, but won't be able to get it untill the middle of January. It was so lucky having a roof chippy to help out, he just worked everything out on the ground, cut it all and we threw it up and nailed it together. I would have spent months measuring and figureing it all out. We managed to do this in about 12 working hours between two of us. It is a bit hairy holding things up in the air and trying to nail them together while standing on skinny little ceiling joists. My mate is like a spider monkey and runs around like he is walking on the ground. I am toying with the idea of doing a drop bulkhead over this area to help define the kitchen, but I am a little bit worried it will all be too busy with the cathedral ceiling in front. Any suggestions or thoughts? My wife and I have picked the colours for the externals. The weatherboards on the bottom half are going to be Dulux Rainmaker. The hardiflex sheeting top half is going to Dulux Pre School Quarter and the rafters and trims will be Dulux Lexicon. Re: Argyle WA - Rocky Hill OB 29Jan 15, 2012 10:35 pm Hi All, Making good progress. Since the last post we have finished the roof structure, plumb cut the rafters and painted them, installed the gutter to 3 sides of the house including gutter guard, battened out 3 sides of the roof for the tin and installed the windows and sliding door frame. It is the equivalent of 2 stories at the ridge and I am really happy with it. We ended up changing the colour scheme, we did samples and the rainmaker was too close to the colourbond blue. So we ended up going for Tranquil Retreat on the weatherboards, White on White for the upper cladding and rafter ends and the window trims will be colourbond Ironstone to match the gutter. I have ordered all the cladding which will be here next week. Going to try and paint it before we install it and start installing on the Australia Day (long weekend for me). Re: Argyle WA - Rocky Hill OB 30Jan 29, 2012 9:36 pm Hi All, Made a start on the cladding, lost a couple of days to Australia Day and then the ensuing hangover I am using a James Hardie product around the windows. It is called Scyon Axent. I like it because it is fibre cement so won't burn which is good as we are in the bush, downside is it is expensive, only comes in one size and is hard to come by. They have sold out and I can't get the rest of what I need until the middle of March. But I do like the chunky profile. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The Newport weather boards are the shiz. Concealed fixings, they just fly on. My wife and I did half of the house in about 8 hours. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I was hoping to use a fibre cement product as the joining strip on the vertically clad hardiflex, but can't get a low enough profile, so it is going to have to be treated pine. Hope to give you a call in the next couple of weekends and pop over for a visit. Had to dash to Mandurah today. Re: Argyle WA - Rocky Hill OB 32Jan 29, 2012 10:51 pm Hi ChargerWA I have been quietly following your build and it looks great. We are owner building in Gelorup - almost neighbours! Looking forward to seeing more progress. Great Job. BLOG: thehousewebuilt2010.blogspot.com (And are still building!) Argyle WA - Rocky Hill OB 33Feb 01, 2012 10:18 am Love to watch a place come together (especially when you discover a thread and the job is well underway!). Oh those rocks! Can't wait to see your home grown floors. We will be using Hardies Scyon products also - Linea and Matrix. Haven't looked into the cost yet - oops. Anyway, I shall continue to watch with interest and admiration. Re: Argyle WA - Rocky Hill OB 34Feb 26, 2012 8:11 pm Hi Guys, Thanks for the comments. Danni, I had a look at your thread and the house is looking great, can't believe the size of that limestone wall you had to put in . Missy, I love the Linea and matrix scyon profiles as well. I didn't use them out here as the house is a bit too cottage to be able to pull those modern profiles off, but I am already thinking about the next house with a stone ground floor and a Matrix first floor. Better win the lotto. Kerry, as you can see we currently have no social life so chance are we will be here. Drop in any time. On to the house, been getting lots done. We have managed to get the gutters fininshed, all of the gutter guard in, over half the cladding done and the eave finished over the cathedral window. The eave over the window took a full weekend on it's own out of a cherry picker. Too high for ladders. The yesterday a mate came out to give me a hand with the roof. We got one of the long sides done before he had to go but he will be back in a fortnight to help me finish it. We picked the top and bottom colour for the cladding and then decided to make the window trims a colourbond colour so we could buy a gutter and not have to paint it, always with the intention of going for a zinc roof. We were trying to decide between woodland grey and ironstone and ended up going for Ironstone as we usually play it safe with colours, but decided to go for the more exciting option this time. After installing the gutters was done we stood back and looked at the gutter and decided that with a zinc roof that would make 4 colours on the external, and that would be too much, so we were kind of cornered into going for an Ironstone roof. I would have never picked it outright but we are really happy with the combo. I am taking a week off in the middle of March so I can finish the cladding, roof and start glazing the window frames. After that I will get in and wire and plumb it. I will start on the steps and ramps shortly to, as I will need the ramp to get the gyprock in when the time comes. Re: Argyle WA - Rocky Hill OB 35Feb 26, 2012 9:03 pm still planning on visiting some time. We've been busy here though not as busy as you have been obviously. We have ironstone on our roof. it changes colour so often. We are really happy with it. Your place is looking really good. Re: Argyle WA - Rocky Hill OB 37Feb 27, 2012 7:22 am Hi ChargerWA, Great job! It is really starting to look like a home now.... I can see you are a bit of a jack of all trades and I think you mentioned you are an electrician but surely you aren't a plumber too??? Or do you have a plumber mate?? Re: Argyle WA - Rocky Hill OB 38Feb 27, 2012 8:10 am I'm enjoying watching your house grow ... love the cathedral ceiling - if there was one thing I would have loved to have it would have been that ... must be very satisfying doing so much yourselves and seeing it take shape ... and what a view from that cathedral window For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: Argyle WA - Rocky Hill OB 39Feb 27, 2012 8:45 am rocketship Hi ChargerWA, Great job! It is really starting to look like a home now.... I can see you are a bit of a jack of all trades and I think you mentioned you are an electrician but surely you aren't a plumber too??? Or do you have a plumber mate?? Hi Rocketship, There's only two things you need to know to be a plumber. Sh#t flows down hill and don't chew your fingernails But seriously, I will do it and have organised for a plumber I know to come in and check it and pressure test it once i'm done. Thats the beauty of working in commercial construction, in housing the trades come one after the other and don't usually cross over but in commercial all the trades are on site together at the same time (usually for 12 months) so you get lots of good contacts in the industry. Re: Argyle WA - Rocky Hill OB 40Apr 08, 2012 7:13 pm Hi All, Lots of progress bewteen posts. The roof is finished, the cladding is finished and it is nearly painted, just the front to finish (though I haven't picked up a brush yet my wife has done it all, I HATE painting).
