Assuming you have gyprock ceilings, and assuming you are filling in the hole completely. Get a strip of gyprock no wider than the hole, but about twice as long. Drill a hole in the centre of that strip and run a piece of string through the hole tying of a knot of one side so the string does not pull right through. Apply some cornice adhesive or plaster to one side of the gyprock strip and then turn it on it's side and poke through the hole into the ceiling cavity and pull the glue side down so that it sticks to the other side of the ceiling (in the roof space) use the string to tie a small weight to hold it down whilst the cement sets. Once set cut the string, then use another patch of gyprock the same size as the hole and cement this into place with some more adhesive (may need a few screws to hold it there). Once set use some flushing tape and patch, flush and sand as per normal ready for painting. Re: How to patch a downlight hole in the ceiling? 3Aug 06, 2011 7:57 pm We used the cutout piece from the new downlight position and used that to fill the hole and then patched from there ... if that makes sense. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Re: How to patch a downlight hole in the ceiling? 4Aug 06, 2011 8:14 pm ESB We used the cutout piece from the new downlight position and used that to fill the hole and then patched from there ... if that makes sense. Makes perfect sense to me Re: How to patch a downlight hole in the ceiling? 5Aug 06, 2011 8:20 pm Cheers for that. Sounds very complicated eyspy Patchup ? That sounds a lot easier!!! So if I glue all around and apply tape and top coat it won't ever hang/drop? Does there need to be another layer of gyprock on top to hold it? I screwed a backing piece of wood longer than the diameter of the 'hole' and then screwed into those through the ceiling to attach the cutout in place, then used the mesh tape stuff and plastered from there and finished off with the finishing plaster. It wasn't perfect, but it had to do as I couldn't get anyone to come out for a small job. Eyspy's method is fantastic ... I found pictorial step by steps for Eyspy's method and the one I used through google when I needed to learn quickly how to make the repair. When it's laid out in pictures it is very easy to follow. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Re: How to patch a downlight hole in the ceiling? 8Aug 06, 2011 8:35 pm Testedbytime Cheers for that. Sorry 'Testedbytime' my explanation method might be confusing, if I had picture you would see in seconds how simple it is. I'll try again. To put a patch on a hole it has to be glued to a backing, you just can't grab a round piece of gyprock and glue it in the opening, it has to be pushed up against something, hence the backing. No backing and you will just push it through to the ceiling space. Re: How to patch a downlight hole in the ceiling? 9Aug 06, 2011 8:37 pm Thanks guys!!! Makes a lot more sense now I've got topcoat and tape. What else do I need? I've got wood and a hole cutout obviously...
