Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 May 30, 2011 2:24 pm Hi everyone, I know this has been touched on in the past, but I thought I might start this thread, hoping that I may receive some valuable feedback. I am an owner builder about to start building on a semi rural block that is not connected to town sewerage. I have my plans ready for submission but everything is on hold until I decide on what waste water system to choose. I have browsed various websites, received a couple of quotes from various brands, but I am still not confident as to which system to go with. I particulary liked the idea of the wormfarms - A&A & Onzite, but cannot seem to find any feedback from customers As with most owner builders I am on a very tight budget & I am hoping there are systems available out there that are not going to break the bank! If anyone out there can contribute any helpful info or ideas it would be much appreciated. Thanks! Re: Waste Water Systems 4Jun 03, 2011 3:05 pm I guess it comes down to what the council will accept. You may want to contact them and see if the have a list of approved systems (my local council did), then take it from there. Have you considered a composting toilet and seperate grey water treatment system, a cheaper way to go and would save upwards of 20,000 L of water a year and reduce the number of tanks you need? Re: Waste Water Systems 5Jun 04, 2011 9:43 am Hi Steve, In the past I never paid much attention to composting toilets as we were set on building a slab floor on the ground... HOWEVER, yesterday morning we met with an engineer & he has persuaded us to go with a suspended slab instead of doing a deep cut & fill. So this opens the door to having a composting toilet (having the pedestal on the slab & the bin below the floor)! I've spent a few hours on the net searching for compost toilets. So far the ECOFLO 750 looks like it could be quite suitable. Im now searching for grey water systems. I dont think it would be necessary for us to re-use the treated water, I would be happy for the 'treated' water to be safely disposed of somehow in the garden. Any ideas would be most welcome! So glad that there seems to be options available other than the 'waste water / sewerage treatment ' systems, - they appear to be great products, but unfortunately out of my price range!!! Re: Waste Water Systems 6Jun 06, 2011 2:00 pm Justo, we looked at a heap of options and in the end went with a Rotaloo waterless composting toilet http://www.rotaloo.com/01loo.html It is a good unit, needs to be warm to function really well ie housed under the house with a bit of insulation etc so it composts at optimum rate. It has a very low wattage fan that runs 24 hours, suck any smell away and evapourates all the liquid waste. We use about 2 bags of clean sawdust ($11 from the farm supply shop)per year in the loo to compost the humanure, so it is very vcheap to run. Compost goes under trees etc when we are planting. Our grey water system is a simple Adobee one http://www.wormsloos.com.au/PDF/GreyWat ... ochure.pdf Once again very low tech and affordable but effective. The site above shows the full set up and provides some good info. I think keeping it simple is the key, we looked at water reuse systems etc but it was cheaper to just put on an extra tank and collect more water. Steve Re: Waste Water Systems 7Jun 10, 2011 2:47 am Hi justo, We have looked into the toilet systems as well we have freinds who have the system with worms they are good but need a bit of attention and you have to be carefull about what go's down the drain, I have five Clivus Multrum waterless coposting toilets at work in the remote area's of the Kimberly of WA they do work well but as Steve says they need heat to work efficietly and also need alittle maintanence there web site is http://www.clivusmultrum.com.au/, but in our house we used a Everhard system which comprises of 1 x 4000ltr black water plastic tank a 200ltr grey water plastic tank and two 9mtr concrete leach drains the grey water system has a pump in it which pumps the water out to the garden through irrigation drip systen @ 60psi all up system cost $3500 for all fittings and $2000 for earthworks, we bourght the Everhard systen through Land & Water they specialise in waste water but you cand get it through Bunnings as well, http://www.everhard.com.au/, http://www.landwater.com.au/. Hope this helps. Heath 18 90472 From what I know about water tanks (I've been working with a client on them for a few years now) is this - The concrete can last a lifetime if they don't crack for some… 2 10626 4 10821 |
