I glue and pin the mitres. The painter will seal down the edge with gap filler if needed. Gap filler is what I'm after. We will be painting the house ourselves and are trying to make things simpler for us and avoid having to use hap filler on those 45 degree points. We are thinking it would be quicker if we get our carpenter to put it on the angles before connecting... The only spot you should need to fill is between wall and architrave. Even if you do have to fill the mitres I'm pretty sure painters use polly filler rather than no more gaps, it's easier to sand and finish nice and smoothly.
