Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Mar 30, 2011 10:15 pm Is there a thread discussing the order of doing things? I am particularly interested in the post plastering steps. Is there anything else that an be done at the same time as painting? Does door jamb installation come before or after screeding? What is usually done at the same time as tiling? Should timber flooring be installed before tiling? What about polishing/laquering, should it be done at the end or straight after it's been laid? Re: What's the best order of doing things? 2Mar 31, 2011 12:20 am I'd really like to know too! We've got it sussed up until lock-up but then the fit-out all gets a bit hazy and confusing. What is usually done at the same time as tiling? Should timber flooring be installed before tiling? What about polishing/laquering, should it be done at the end or straight after it's been laid? it really depends on what you want to do i find it easier to paint and lay flooring before any skirts or door jambs go on as it gives a better finish and makes life easier not having to cut around door jambs ect. i wouldnt laquer/polish floors until everything is finished this is probably the last job id do just before moving in. its easier to paint ceiling without lights in it gives a better finish and makes it once again easier and quicker. and i know most people prefer to put kitchen and cupboards in before flooring but from a renovaters perspective its a pain when you change kitchens or vanitys later on were doing all our floors first then installing all cabintary after our doors will be the last job done. i would have preferred to wait for our plastering and painting to be completed before we laid our floors but unfortunately we had to lay the floor now its a real pain trying to keep it safe but if you can wait then wait. hope this helps a little but there really is no set way just easier ways lol stay safe happy building Re: What's the best order of doing things? 5Apr 01, 2011 10:47 pm Thanks so much for that Shelley!!! Should tiling also be done before door frames/architraves are fitted? Re: What's the best order of doing things? 6Apr 01, 2011 11:18 pm In the west our frames go in straight away when the internal walls get built (double brick). When I do framing I'd prefer to sheet then put in door frames then screed and tile then finally finish with door and stops and architrave. If you are putting in timber floors it is easier to cut the flooring around just a frame rather than a frame, stops and architraves. What is the best and most convenient for everyone, and what the trades are prepared to do are often different things. Should tiling also be done before door frames/architraves are fitted? id definately tile 1st tiles are hard enough to cut around edges and get a perfect fit if they are done 1st the skirts will cover any rough edges and give you a nice clean finish stay safe happy building Re: What's the best order of doing things? 8Apr 03, 2011 9:05 pm Thank you both! We are only having tiles in wet areas. The rest will be timber, but the same rule applies I guess Re: What's the best order of doing things? 9Apr 03, 2011 9:07 pm I've been told that I should ask my carpenter to start the frames higher off the floor to accommodate for the timber flooring to be wedged underneath. So to make it look neater. What's your opinion on this? Is it worth it? We are having timber flooring. Re: What's the best order of doing things? 10Apr 03, 2011 10:28 pm If the frames haven't got architraves or door stops on then you don't really need to lift the frames. The flooring can be cut very neatly when you aren't scribing around the finished frames. You can lift the frames if you like, just make sure that all floor fishes are the same height otherwise you can end up with gaps. If your tiles are 10mm and your flooring is 16mm at the joins to wet areas you will have a 6mm gap under your frame on the tile side.
