Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Mar 28, 2011 1:18 am The sale of my rented work studio meant that my house building (see my other thread) was put temporarily aside whilst I built a new work studio at home on the Hill House Farm. The studio is a basic 4 x 12 m space, on a slab with a hybrid of pine frame and post and beam, skillion roof. It is heavily insulated passive solar design with plenty of cross flow ventilation. Cladding is gal corro as I wanted the 'shed' look and to fire proof it as much as possible. The building is constructed using about 20% recycled/salvaged materials. I built it mainly with assistance from my lovely wife. This is it's building.... The raft slab went down pretty easy. Thin long slabs are a joy to pour, I almost enjoy them: lol: almost..... They add to the Shed-itecture look Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The size of the studio was determined by the amount of flat space I could scrap out between the dam wall and the chook yard and veggie gardens; this was the only 'flattish' space with access on the entire farm ... I was hoping that it would cost about a total of about $16K all up..... The crazy weather slowed me down a bit, way too hot one day, too wet the next, then very windy..... progree was slow Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Most of the roof framing on and clad the back, sides and mid front walls. http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/Fishdejour/PC030060.jpg My generator broke down and I was left without power (tools) for a few weeks, how did they build before power tools!!! The roof on with the help from my lovely wife. I forgot to allow for the side eves when I ordered the roofing iron so I was one sheet short http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/Fishdejour/PC060065.jpg The front eve is extend that far to provide shade cover on the the windows and doors in summer but allow sun in during winter. The final 2 wall frames fitted into the 'holes'. This allowed me to finish off external wall cladding and whilst I was at it fit the missing roofing sheet. Half the wall cladding was old stuff that we salvaged. Made the door frames and started insulating and fitting the interior wall cladding. All the polyester insulation was salvaged from an office building that was being refitted, got it for free (my labour to remove it). http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/Fishdejour/PC230104.jpg Well the christmas came and went and held me up from doing any work on my studio.....Got back to work eventually and managed to get most of the wall insulation, wall linings and stopping done. I decided to use blue board inside as I wanted it to be a tough (bump proof) finish as it is a workspace after all. I don't like Gyprock in such spaces as it is not very durable. My wife stripped the windows that came from the tip, she paint stripped and oiled (Sikens) them and they look great, just needed some new glass here and there. http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/Fishdejour/studio1.jpg The doors finally went in despite a few router problems (mainly user error), pretty much to lock up stage . http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/Fishdejour/P1310071.jpg I fitted the guttering and had a dingo level the tanks site. http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/Fishdejour/P1310078.jpg We finished the cieling with timber lineing boards, added a small stand alone solar system, installed an LED lighting system, several 240V GPO's, and a 24volt water pump off the tank. I fitted several cupboards and benches (a remodeled salvaged kithchen). It has proven to be a very cosy little building, staying cool during the the summer heat and suprisingly warm in the cool weather. We are still to install a gas instant hot water system and a sink at some stage. It has been a fun little project and we are very happy with the result, very cost effective building at under $22K for everything (50m2) and not so hard to build. http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr164/Fishdejour/P6100120-1.jpg Steve Re: Shed-itecture - a studio project on Hill House Farm 3Mar 06, 2013 12:26 pm It has worked out really well. I no longer work in it (had a career change) so we have turned it into a self contained studio for WOOFERS ,visiters, artist retreat etc etc. The interior climate is great both summer and winter and the off grid systems have worked out well providing adequate power, water etc. I am currently building a seperate bathroom down there so guests do not have to hike up the hill to the house for a washroom.
