Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Feb 22, 2011 9:02 am I live just outside of Tully and I've been scrounging quite a few trailer loads of hardwood scrap timber from a local Cyclone Yasi dumping ground..I was saddened to see such an amount of lovely old timber being smashed up by front end loaders..so i have had a few trips after the machines are finished for the day to salvage what I can. everything from lengths of 6x1,5x2 6x2 8x8 right up to a few monster 4m lengths of 12x12.. I want to build a basic 6x6 metre gable roof outdoor living area at the front of the house entirely from reclaimed Yasi timber and iron. I have been looking at some span tables and can find rafter dimensions but cant find beam dimensions for the 6 metre beams of which I will need 3...(or 7m as there will be a bit of eave overhang each end,but span is 6m) Any ideas..? Also wondering about the best way to fix the posts to the concrete footings..? (not sure whether to use the 12 x 12 timbers as feature posts in the high point of the ends as they are or whether to saw them longitudinally in half ...) And lastly and ideas on fixing diagonal timber bracing to give the best looking effect and strength.. Just for anyone interested in our account of the cyclone. http://nqheliconias.blogspot.com/ Scott. My uncle lives in Cairns and I cant believe the regulations required for building because of cyclones. Here in Vic the regs are very different in terms of structures. Re: Beam size for Cyclone Yasi reclaimed timber structure. 4Mar 05, 2011 7:25 am Yes bashworth looked at that site but couldnt see any beam size for timbers over 4.5 m..I need to know what size I need for a 6m span in a W50c area... foc1 ,yes engineering standards up here demand stronger structures..now if only shed companies would stop using those useless roller doors that blow in every cyclone we get..
