Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Feb 14, 2011 8:55 pm Hi, first time poster My Wife and I are about to start owner building in Melbourne and we want to do an owner builder course. I would guess that the main ones offered by the likes of Holmesglen and Chisholm are basically the same, but i have seen a few cheaper online ones from private operators. I understand that you get what you pay for, but there are exceptions. Does anyone have any experience with courses, or are they even worth doing ? Re: Owner Builders Courses 2Feb 15, 2011 2:33 am If this is ur first O/B project, & ur not in the building trade, it is essential u do a course - i think homeone offers such a facility. remember as an o/ber YOU assume all the legal responsibility for the build. i recon its best to do ur first O/B on a smaller project rather than ur dream home. our first was 90/100 sq m 3 bed 1 bath - see our last O/b in my thread - this one is our 6th.... Good Luck whatever u choose T&V Re: Owner Builders Courses 3Feb 15, 2011 5:49 am I did an online course - which was most convenient. You can study when you get the time, the course notes seem very concise and thorough - and there is a 5 part online exam. The support was very good too. http://www.ozob.com.au/ See what you think! I guess the advantage of a course you had to attend would be that you'd meet like-minded people from your area who you could share contacts etc. with. Was it worth it? Yes, got us to the next stage of the approval process. We're not doing a new build though, just rennovations. So now only the New South Wales Course in Owner-Builder Compliance can be submitted with a permit application. http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/Tenan ... ourse.html The new courses are somewhat more expensive, longer and more intensive than the old course. Re: Owner Builders Courses 5Feb 16, 2011 6:21 am You can still do the online one - you just have to take your course certificate to Fair Trading with a bunch of ID, rates notice etc. then they issue you with the permit. It was pretty painless (and not too expensive - about $450 all in, I think - $300 or so for course, & $150 for permit) House burned down: 3 April 2010 DA approval: 15 December 2010 (Yep, it took THAT long!) We bought the land a few months ago and planned to use a builder originally, but now we are starting to lean towards O/Bing so we can have more control on the quality and the features of the finished home. Hopefully we can save some money along the way too. I work in the building industry so i have contacts, plus we have friends in the trade who can help and guide us. We will do a course of some sort we just have to work out whats best for us based on whats available in Victoria. You have great clearance to damp proof course all the way around which is rare with so many cowboy landscapers and concreters.
