Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum Re: Rebuilding after arson fire - and the April Curse! 41Mar 18, 2011 1:20 pm Weeeeeellllll it ended up being Thursday, not Monday - but the concretors worked really hard (on Saturday too), and we now have a floor! (Well, the joists anyway). It is QUITE exciting! I am at home sick, so I get the chance to catch up with blogging/posting etc. (have been rather busy at work ) [random thought - I don't like the clapping smiley, he always looks sarcastic to me !!]. Still lots to sort out - tiles are very nearly ordered for the next shipment; forgot to order back door (laundry) when we did the window order (well, I didn't forget - the window company didn't quote for it for some reason, so I just left it); trying to figure out which bushfire shutters to get, then kitchens, bathrooms, doors, flooring, fire, laundry/shelving/built-in design to come up with too (and lighting. And other things I'm sure I've forgotten. What HAVE I forgotten - I hope its not crucial! Have been through the "things to remember" forum - was v handy). There's a lot involved in house building, that's for sure! Re: Rebuilding after arson fire - and the April Curse! 45Mar 18, 2011 2:01 pm Neighbours were a bit worried, but they were quite far away from where the old house was, so they weren't in any real danger. The fireys were there too keeping an eye on where the embers went (so I gather). Countdown to April 2011 - 14 days... We're now worried about the room dimensions - just off out with a tape measure!! We're probably worrying about nothing. Can't get pictures at the moment as I'm leaving before its light & back after its dark... Still major progress! House burned down: 3 April 2010 DA approval: 15 December 2010 (Yep, it took THAT long!) In fact it is pretty awesome We have 3m high ceilings (much to the disgust of builders) so the dimensions were looking odd. Lucky you have such a handy family. Did you get out to Utah and go climbing? I want my wedding in Scotland so we can go ice climbing for my honeymoon. Sucks to be an ice climber in Brisbane - don't even have an indoor center. Did your father in law organise the materials or did you guys get a kit? Re: Rebuilding after arson fire - and the April Curse! 52May 25, 2011 8:47 pm Sorry guys - I gave up posting - it's bad enough keeping up with the blog !! April was kind to us (but not the builders - **** weather...). We have a roof, most of the outside walls, and a massive projected over-spend... so pretty normal really! Answers to questions: We spent 3 months in the States - largely in Kentucky (Red River Gorge) - bit of climbing in California, Utah, Arizona and Colorado (sport). Wedding was in Vegas & was fab (but no climbing). Not into the ice, after surviving crappy Scottish winters teetering up verglassed slabs. Warm stuff for me!! My father-in-law has sorted out most of the buildery stuff (frame & trusses, roofing, concretor, buildng supplies), and then I have generally tried to get the price down I have found some of the contractors (lots of phoning around & pleading with them for better prices...). All our contractors have been great - with Bob's contacts & just luck I think, everyone has turned up when they've said, stuff has been delivered on time etc. Really things are going very well - just the damn price! Still, what can you expect, building an architect-designed one-off that's quite big. Not a McMansion, but still quite big (2 storeys etc. really adds to the price). I am just incredibly thankful that everyone's helping us out so much. Anyway, so that's the update - check out the blog for photos! And lots of my whinging about how much work I've had to do - and some cute pics of our dog House burned down: 3 April 2010 DA approval: 15 December 2010 (Yep, it took THAT long!) Re: Rebuilding after arson fire - and the April Curse! 54May 26, 2011 11:13 pm Hey Lucy, I love the photos of your 4 legged site supervisor! Your pics of removing the water from the roof tarps reminded me of a dinner in Ho chi Minh city a few years ago when hubby & 3 waiters used plastic chairs to remove water from the 4 roof quarters of one of those portable gazebo things....... all over the cook, her wok and her fire. We didn't get dinner there that night! hope your build continues to stay dry cheers PG We are tossing up between a Jarrahdale radiant wood fire (the Pioneer) and a convection wood fire (Innovator or Countryman) but cannot decide on which type of wood fire is… 0 5250 Need some advice.
