I was hoping not to spend $1000 on a level but I also dont want to end up with a piece of junk that is destined for the rubbish bin. I will also probably look to get a reciever so it can be used outdoors as I understand in daylight you need this to pick up the beam accurately Thanks in advance https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=44762 My Owner builder journey extending a 1930's Bungalow Re: Laser level advice needed 2Jan 02, 2011 1:08 pm while a laser level is no doubt very handy. I reckon spend $100 and get yourself a good spirit level. With the 1000 I would be buying the following. Good sliding compound saw and a compressor. These two items will be more handy. Unless your doing your own slab I cant see much purpose for one of these. Re: Laser level advice needed 3Jan 02, 2011 1:23 pm Ditto to the above advice. You can buy laser levels with receivers on eBay for around the $500 mark that would suffice for general handyman/ light trade usage but if you are a tradesman then you would look to spend around the $1k mark on a topcon or similar. Any trade that needs one will have their own so in general unless you need one after the build I would say invest your money elsewhere. What did you plan on using the laser level to do? Re: Laser level advice needed 5Jan 02, 2011 4:07 pm chippy Ditto to the above advice. What did you plan on using the laser level to do? The main things I thought I have in mind for the Laser Level which I was looking to tackle myself were - - Timber Deck construction - Internal fitout of items on walls such as Picture rails (Its an old style house reno) - Setout for strip footings for a boundary fence brick wall (Will go in late after pool has been installed) thats the main ones I can think of where I wasnt going to subby the work out to tradies https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=44762 My Owner builder journey extending a 1930's Bungalow Re: Laser level advice needed 6Jan 02, 2011 4:28 pm A laser level will certainly help with the deck and footings but isn't essential. You can use a long screed and spirit level quite successfully to level across long distances. For the picture rail I'd just measure off the bottom edge of the cornice and use a chalk line to ping a line. The ceiling will be (or should be) level enough to do this quickly and efficiently. You can hire laser levels for under $100 a day if you really need to for the external work and if you get your timing right you can easily knock of that work in 1 day. (Cost you about $50/day) the ones you can hire are VERY easy to use... Just stand and press a button and it self levels. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Laser level advice needed 8Jan 02, 2011 5:34 pm Thanks guys, certainly some food for thought if its worth it or not. I was hoping I could pick something useful up (possibly from overseas) for a few hundred instead of hiring to add to the "toybox" but maybe its better to get some other "toys" first as you say https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=44762 My Owner builder journey extending a 1930's Bungalow Re: Laser level advice needed 9Jan 02, 2011 5:47 pm like a box(s) of beers to discuss the current situation re: BUILDING Sorry that is my Christmas 'spirit' coming out Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Laser level advice needed 10Jan 04, 2011 12:12 am Get urself a line level - skyscrapers were built with line levels & still straight, level & standing today. from memory last one i bought was about $20. three golden rules - never muck about with the tags that hang on the line, always have a good quality line with NO joins & always measure to the exact centre of the line when ur attaching the level - guessing isn't good enough. cheers Tony Re: Laser level advice needed 11Jan 05, 2011 12:21 pm Thanks all for your help guys. Took all the info on board but decided to get a 4V1H laser level with an outdoor reciever and case from O/S. Will cost me about $240 landed at my door as compared to similiar thing here for over $1000 so in my book better than hiring and its something I will aways have handy. Now to the next "toy" https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=44762 My Owner builder journey extending a 1930's Bungalow Re: Laser level advice needed 12Feb 28, 2011 4:07 pm What about this one?
