Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Nov 09, 2010 1:38 pm Hi People, Some questions about who arranges for the utilities on first contact. I realise that we need an account for Western Power, Alinta, Water Corp and Telstra but who arranges what happens after the accounts have been created ? Is it a case that the installing trades arrange for the physical connections to be made or do we need to arrange for this separately ? Hope someone can help. Thanks Re: Perth Utilities Questions 2Nov 09, 2010 8:26 pm You'll need to pay up front for water and power connection to your site. Western Power/Synergy will install a temporary power supply, with meter, to your site. Same with water. Water Authority will connect 1 standpipe and set up the sewage headworks. The costs will be based on the distance and character of work required. Expect $750+ for electricity and $6500+ for sewage/water (these are 2009 figures, they could've gone up). Both utilities have web sites where you can submit the details, to get a quote. If you have bought a standard block those fees will not be that high. Also for telstra you can call them aand they will arrange telephone to point of first connection. But it is cheaper to get your electrician to put in a conduit for telstra when doing the power run in if this is viable. Re: Perth Utilities Questions 7Nov 10, 2010 8:49 pm xln747 Thanks for the feedback guys. The $6500 was really starting to worry me ! And me! Re: Perth Utilities Questions 8Nov 13, 2010 4:55 pm Generally the electricians will do a run in for the telstra line but you will have to co-ordinate Telstra to do the phone connection upon completion of the home - expect about $250 establishment fee. Also, if you're co-ordinating run-ins of the services (to a battleaxe or something like that) it's best to get the trench dug out and left open for everyone to put their services in around the same time you do the drains, to save on re-digging. Hope that helps! Re: Perth Utilities Questions 10Nov 14, 2010 10:23 am xln747 We do have a battleaxe so will keep in mind the trench stuff. In my case, the plumbers came with a digger and opened up the trench, to run water pipe to my battleaxe. I've lined up the sparkies for the next day to do the wire and Telstra for the 3d day. It'd cost me too much to have plumbers to come back with the digger to fill in the trench, so I did it myself, by hand Just make sure that, if you're planning something similar, whoever digs the trench charges you for just digging. BTW, plumbing standards warn against burying any hard object (ex rubble) next to the poly water piper, as it contracts and dilutes with the changes of pressure and theoretically could wear itself out against it and rupture. We had them come in with the excavator and dig in the soakwells (1500 and 1800, 3 in total) and dig the run in trench on one day. The plumber and sparky came in that afternoon and did the run in's. The sparky laid a conduit for Telstra. Then the site workers came the next day with the bobcat and filled the trench in and laid an access track then completed the pad and compaction. We had the trench run down to the point were the services would turn and run across to the house. The plumber and sparky were happy to hand dig across the driveway to the house when needed. The services are left coiled up against the side fence. This saved us lots of money as the plumber and sparky didn't have to worry about bringing someone in to dig the trench and the siteworkers were there anyway. Plus, I didn't have to lift a shovel. Our siteworkers were very good and recomended doing it this way. I was going to do it later in the build but now the access track can stay put as a good base to the driveway and the plumber and sparky are happy, and I saved some $$.
