Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Sep 23, 2010 10:02 am Well, I've finally (I think) decided on the floorplan, now it's time to decide on the roof. We are on acreage and building a 120sqm rectangle with the long side facing north. I originally wanted a clerestory, but being only 2 rooms wide, I don't think it's going to work. Next choice is skillion, and as we are on a small slope, it would be with the low side facing south. We are off grid, I'm now wondering how this is going to affect the solar panels? Won't we then have to have to have the panels on stilts to make them face north? If I minimise the angle, can I get away with it, or am I stuck with a gable roof? If this is the case, is it possible to build a gable off centre? ie have the tip of the roof above the dividing wall between living and sleeping areas? Thanks for any suggestions Re: Skillion Roof & Solar Panels Question 2Sep 24, 2010 4:36 pm Solar panels work best when set up at an angle that depends on the local latitude. You'll have to either have a bracket on your roof (but that will spoil your house looks), or, since you've got space, you could probably have them installed on the ground.
