Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Aug 06, 2010 2:05 pm Hi all was just wondering the extent of the actual work people are doing in regards to OB. It seems alot of people are mangeing and "cleaning"but not much else, am I being naive with the following? I plan to: site works-employ surveyor then do my own earthworks and formwork steel fixing for slab Concreting- will employ concretors for the pour. plumbing-employ a plumber but dig alot of "trenches"myself. Electrical-aman electrician myself framework-premanufacture off site, erect on site myself with a builder friend Its RBV so not sure I can do much but emply a brickie for that. externals-clad or HEBEL Power wall-install myself Roofing-install myself Kitchen-best mate is a kitchen/cabinet maker. Gyprocking-mate owns a gyprock supply company so will install myself/with him. Am I missing something. Please give feedback. Re: Extent of OB work. 2Aug 06, 2010 3:33 pm Ross...I suppose it depends on how much skill you have and time, I basically do everything myself too, stumps, framing, plastering, cladding, even built my kitchen from scratch, including making the jarrah doors etc...I reckon if I can do it, why pay some-one else...have learnt a lot over the years and saved heaps. Re: Extent of OB work. 3Aug 06, 2010 4:42 pm as per ^^ I will be using a contractor to site scrape and achieve compaction requirements. Then we do the setout, dig the footings/thickenings and prelay trenches E/P. Form up & plastic and mesh, pour the conc, grind the conc, form up for the walls, insitu pour the concrete walls. Fabricate the steel trusses onsite, lift and install, Flat profile roof @28deg pitch installed, A mate is a glazier so will install double glazing for a holiday down south &I will TA.(get the cans) We make the bench tops, vanities, counter tops, mini orb flushing for the bench tops, vanities, counter tops. The carcases are fixed and floating except for the kitchen. Another mate is a sparky and had some concreting done a while back Best mate from school is a plumber of note, capable of doing the funky stuff, he also wants a holiday in Margs hang a few doors, buy some fittings and fixtures... not much as we have the stove and stuff(whitegoods) Tiling well.. throw around a few hand made polished recycled glass & concrete tablettes and Bobs your uncle(bro actually ) Oh yeh the 100kl fish ponds and aquaponic growbeds, poured by us, plumbed by us... Together in the house that Onc designed and drew.... I think we are doing our bit... But like people say "It is not how big it(in this situ, how much you do) is but the way you use it". So a little with good skills and a lot of love is waaaay better than 'pushing on' through the pain barrier. and I applaud you endevour Good luck Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Extent of OB work. 4Aug 06, 2010 10:29 pm OUrs on the other hand is being done with a lot of love on our part and lot of skill on the part of others. We are Obing because we want to be involved in the whole process and whilst dont have the actual building skills (although at some point in my life I want to learn to do concrete .... ) I have a whole lot of passion and really enjoy working with people. I have loved every minute .... even a wall coming down as it is all aiming towards our final product ... our home. Some people are lucky, they have the ability to do all of this stuff, we have made some great friends and contacts along the way ... Good luck, and enjoy the ride!!!
