I will be laying HARDWOOD FLOOR and want to buy plywood so that I can nail down the HARDWOOD FLOOR Could you please advise if theirs is any place near by in SYDNEY, NEW CASTLE or ACT where I can buy cheap and good quality Plywood? I am looking for either 5mm or 7mm thickness. Thanks forum, Cheers, Simpson Re: Where can i buy reasonable ply wood? 2Jul 29, 2010 6:35 pm You want to nail down a HARDWOOD FLOOR into a 5mm or 7mm thick plywood? And would it be top or secret nail? Will the plywood be installed over chipboard or concrete? How much is it at Bunnings? I know of a few places, but not sure if it's chaper than B ... The cheapest you will get imported 15mm ply is about $40 /sheet If money is your major concern, look at using 19mm hardwood battens. I have researched at length the thickness of plywood to fix down prior to installing hardwood overlay flooring. Minimum would be at least 12mm so the nails or staples would get a grip in it. Also there would be too much flexing in anything thinner as well. Re: Where can i buy reasonable ply wood? 5Jul 29, 2010 8:27 pm Dont ask me details, Im just the wife. Yes, it will on Concrete floor. Bunnings is costing $30 per sheet. What is the difference between top nail and secret nail? What will be expected plywood thickness for Top Nail and what will be expected plywood thickness for Secret Nail? Could you please advise their places name? Cheers, Simpson Re: Where can i buy reasonable ply wood? 8Jul 30, 2010 9:06 am Hi Simpson, So, it's a hardwood floor and going over concrete base, therefore you cannot use plywood thinner than 15mm. Even if you are using overlay hardwood flooring, it is better to use 15mm (rather than 12mm which is often used with overlay). I am not sure if the same applies to top nailing, but it definitely does apply to secret nailing. Top nailing is when the nail is driven vertically straight down and the nail head is visible (well, it gets punched in and is masked by putty but still quite obvious). Secret nailing is on a 45 degree angle into the t&g section on the side in the middle of the board, so this cannot be seen. I assume that the Bunnings' cost of $30 per sheet is for the 5 to 7mm thick? If so, then it is a bit pricey. Try normal timber selling places, eg. Global Flooring, David Nash, Warrigah Timber, Big River, etc. You have to tell them that you need structural plywood 15mm thick for laying under timber flooring. If you are not concerned about the height of your finished timber floor, the best (and cheapest) is to use battens (timber planks). They are usually 19mm thick, but can be thicker - if you have the height. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Where can i buy reasonable ply wood? 9Jul 30, 2010 7:21 pm You can use imported structual ply, far cheaper than Aust. made stuff. 15mm will be the minimum for 19mm thick flooring as said. Whether you secret-nail or top-nail depends on the width of you floor boards - flooring over a finished width of 85mm must be fixed with 2 nails fixed through the top of the board. The preferred nail is a 'T-nail' Boards under 85mm can be secret-nailed which is actually a staple fired throgh the side of the board on an angle. Re: Where can i buy reasonable ply wood? 12Aug 02, 2010 9:34 pm If you are nailing into a substrate like ply board or particle board such as yellow tongue it is also good practice (standard practice?) to glue as well. Use a flexible setting glue such as one of the polyurethane glues. Do not use a rigid glue like liquid nails. cheers Re: Where can i buy reasonable ply wood? 13Apr 29, 2011 6:01 pm I've been quoted $12 per square metre for 12mm DD stucturalwood. Is this a good price? Re: Where can i buy reasonable ply wood? 15Apr 29, 2011 6:51 pm Are you stalking me kyton? It sure feels that way Where can i buy reasonable ply wood? 16Apr 29, 2011 6:53 pm No but I think that you may have two accounts. Now if I am mistaken by all means say so. But if I am right and my gut tells me I am then you are breaking the Forum's guideline No7. Some things are worth waiting for. Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, but when you're on here a while, you get to know people's tone and things about your posts are very familiar. However I find it weired BBB that you dont like to share, and keep many things secret, is the more to this. I find it fustrating because when I try to help people i like to get feedback etc. This can be in the form of a photo etc or even ideas etc that we can use on our houses. Is there a reason for withholding this information?? Seems good to me.
