Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Jun 06, 2010 8:42 pm We are owner building but subcontracting the vast majority of the work out to others. Our builder is doing most of the coordination etc. One of the jobs I do every week is a clean up of the site so it is ready for them to start again on Monday morning with a clear work area. Picking up the rubbish from the tradies lunches is probably the most irksome job and there is always a pile of wrappings etc from items being installed. The one thing I found was that after sweeping up the worst of the clutter I then get in with a garden leaf blower and quickly move the dust and wood shavings etc out the doors ( and windows ) with that. Wear hearing and eye protection and a dust mask but for getting dust out of corners and off framework it works a treat. Just incase anyone else is wasting time sweeping floors Re: House cleaning while building ( a hint :-) 2Jun 06, 2010 8:55 pm We own a caryard and have one of those push sweepers. We used to take it onsite every weekend and sweep the site / clear all the rubbish to the skip. Kids used to think it was great fun riding their bikes "through" the walls. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: House cleaning while building ( a hint :-) 3Jun 06, 2010 9:09 pm Ha, great idea! Keep that one in the memory banks, thanks. Re: House cleaning while building ( a hint :-) 4Jun 06, 2010 9:11 pm They would be good but they do not get the dust and wood shavings down off the framework Any suggestions for cleaning the slab before putting the floor coverings down ? I would like to try to get it as clean as possible I was thinking of renting a wet /dry vacuum cleaner. Re: House cleaning while building ( a hint :-) 8Jun 09, 2010 9:29 pm The best tip is to just keep the site clean: I found tradies tend to follow suit & don't treat the site like a tip! Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: House cleaning while building ( a hint :-) 9Jun 09, 2010 9:34 pm Hammerhead The best tip is to just keep the site clean: I found tradies tend to follow suit & don't treat the site like a tip! I have been doing that and they are not too bad, but subcontractors do leave a mess. I am happy to clean up rather than have them charge me extra for their time cleaning up. So far only a few have left food scraps or other icky waste.
