Plus, as soon as the power companies know you have solar panels, they will simply charge you extra during the times you need them, i.e. at night. I have seen some potential winners when it comes to new solar technology, the most significant are panels that work 5 time more efficiently, so you need 5 time less panels, but this was a few years ago and I still don’t see them on the market. I wonder if the power companies have something to do with it Current status: Busy making the house our home Built PD Francis 29 on our 576m2 block at Reflections in Tarneit Reflections Estate Thread Our Build Thread Re: Kitome Harrington MkIII...pg48 piggy piggy 1495May 11, 2011 9:01 am a few people i know have solar hot water and have had nothing but trouble with them but could be the make. but the one thing i dont think is seen as an issue with solar panels is that our roofs are designed to hold a certain amount of weight and people are putting 18-26 panels on their roofs without reinforcing the trusses which in 10-20 yrs time given the extra load im sure were going to see lots of sagging roofs and lots of problems. also one thing i didnt know was under your solar warranty if a part dosnt work its replaced but if that same part mucks up again its not covered you have to pay for it so they only warranty each part once which i thought was a load of .......friends have replaced the inner sleeve thingy 5 times so its cost them way more then they could ever save. i did see on a tv show a solar paint that gets painted on your roof it has tiny solar panel things in it that capture the rays its probably still in development stages and the power companys may never allow it to get out of development but it looked really promising without compromising roof loads. i love kiwis idea stay safe happy building Re: Kitome Harrington MkIII...pg48 piggy piggy 1496May 11, 2011 9:37 am +1 - don't do it yet, from what I've read it's not worth the expense. You also have to take into consideration wear and tear of the solar panels, they don't last forever and will need replacing. You are probably only considering it because there is the offer of a "good payment system". If you had to pay up front I am sure you wouldn't do it because you can't afford it. "Solar" seems to be the buzz word at the moment with everyone jumping onto the bandwagon and offering super deals. Just my 20c worth!! Re: Kitome Harrington MkIII...pg48 piggy piggy 1497May 11, 2011 2:00 pm Opinions are good I think so here's mine. We are not going for the 15K one anyway. Just not justifiable for the extra expense. A big part of the reason for wanting solar is the sustainable energy side of things. We have been looking into solar since well before it became the buzz word about town. We would have loved a stand alone system (VERY BIG $$$$$$) and not connecting to town water. Had we money to burn that's what we would do regardless of cost. We plan on getting a system regardless, its just what to spend and how big to make the system, best placement, quality etc that is the question. We have a highly energy efficient home that is a smart design for our location and our power bills are not huge (less than half of our smaller house we had in town) and we could probably be a bit smarter with our usage as well, so calculations so far are favourable toward economic viability. I am keen to hear from anybody else who has a system already installed or about to have one installed. Hindsight is wonderful. Like you, we have built the house with sustainability (within our budget) in mind. Our power bills are quite reasonable-especially compared to others. We will pay the system off interest free for two years-the offset provided by the system against our powerusage should cover the monthly cost over those two years. After that we should be better off, because the system's offset would then be against our power bills.
