Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 May 27, 2010 7:25 pm Was just about to finalise the insurance through FD Beck, when I saw a note on their site which stated that existing home & contents insurance may not be valid during renovations. Sure enough, rang our insurer and they won't cover any claims that could be attributable to the house being insecure or not weatherproof. I read that as they'll use it as an excuse to wriggle out of anything. So if your extension burns down or floods & takes the house with it, or someone breaks in through the tarps covering the hole in your roof, your existing insurance may well not cover anything at all. FD Beck can provide insurance for the existing home, but don't appear to cover contents. BuildSafe will do both existing house and contents (contents up to $50,000 with no further information). Obviously the premium is substantially more than Beck's OB insurance only (~$1400 vs ~$700) but this is something people should be aware of if they are extending.
