Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Jul 23, 2009 10:31 am Hi We have a few sliding doors and windows that sit on top of the red tongue floor. This means that the edge of the red tongue is exposed to the exterior which isn't ideal. Does anyone know the best way to waterproof this? Would I use flashing tape, or aluminium flashing or what? Thanks for any advice. JB Re: Waterproofing timber floor under sliding door 2Jul 23, 2009 6:30 pm I assume you mean red tongue particle board flooring? Its unusual that the edge would be exposed like that with no protection already in place. Is the house a platform floor construction? I would be first painting the edge with an outdoor rated waterproofing sealer. 'Gripset' make good products and are available in small containers. There should already be flashing under the door and window sills which are folded down over the front for water to run down. If theres not you could try to attach some lead flashing or plastic dampcourse and seal the flooring off as best as possible Re: Waterproofing timber floor under sliding door 3Jul 23, 2009 7:12 pm Is this brick veneer? Window reveals generally stand on the bottom plate with the window frame poking out into the brickwork so that the window sits about 50mm inside the face of the bricks. Door reveals sit on the slab or floor but same as windows the door protrudes into the brickwork. As Dukekamaya said the sill flaps direct water flow down the windows and doors to the outside of the brickwork, down the brick sill. In Qld they put a damp course around the window fastened back to the frame as further protection - you may want to do this. You need to keep an eye on the heads of the windows and doors to make sure these are adequately protected too. The heads are protected as they will be flashed off to the polystyrene cladding. But it's under the sliding doors which sit directly on the red tongue, with nothing between the red tongue and the ground, that I'm concerned about. This is a house on stumps, with a red tongue floor. A typical situation is the sliding door that goes in the space on the right of this photo. Flashing needs to be installed prior to the fiiting of the sliding doors. What sort of flashing do you reckon would be most suitable? Aluminium flashing or Colourbond or flashing tape? Thanks JB Re: Waterproofing timber floor under sliding door 8Jul 23, 2009 9:14 pm Alcor (aluminium dampcourse) flashing is normally used here. It can be folded up on the internal edge and both sides of the sill and folded down the wall on the outside stopping water from running inside and allowing it to run outside. OK great thanks for the help. The company installing the foam cladding is flashing off to the top and sides of those windows and doors so I'll get them to flash the bottoms too. Thanks again. JB Re: Waterproofing timber floor under sliding door 10Mar 16, 2010 1:16 pm In typical brick veneer construction, it appears it is mandatory to have all external doors flashed under the door frames - does everyone have this done? What is the norm? Eg. : Are your external main entry doors flashed under the door sill? And how about other external doors, including sliding doors? Re: Waterproofing timber floor under sliding door 11Mar 16, 2010 9:48 pm We flash our external doors with DPM to prevent moisture rising from the slab into the timber. In adition you should treat the timber (paint/sealer) to reduce the risk of rot, but this isnt required in SA by yhr housing code. PS - remember the housing code sets out the minimum standards that are acceptable, and is not a reflection on "best practice". Hi HG, So, are you saying that "best practice" is better than the absolute minimum standards that are supposed to be achieved? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Waterproofing timber floor under sliding door 13Mar 17, 2010 7:48 am Most definatly. The code sets out the minimum that must be achived. This is one of the advantages on OBing, you can take the time to do it right, where trades will just do it up to code. How often do you see trades seal and waterproof the threshold prior to installation (not many would) yet common sence tells you that this will provide a further layer of protection (above that required of using DPM) Waterproofing wet areas is another area where the code and best practice differ widely - I always cover the floor and walls (under the tiles if you are not going to fully tile the room) with a bonding agent and then waterproofing membrane. (I joke and claim the aim is to make the room water tight, if the drain blocks up the room should fill to the window ) Tile mortar is porus, as are many tiles, so water is going to penetrate and thats where the damage begins. (the use of epoxi mortars and quality tiles is a big help, but adds significantly to the cost) Re: Waterproofing timber floor under sliding door 15Mar 17, 2010 9:31 am Is the use of "waterproof" villaboard linings to showers going to help, on top of waterproofing the walls? Or is it only of minimal importance? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Waterproofing timber floor under sliding door 16Mar 17, 2010 2:14 pm I would discribe villaboard as more water to tollerant than aquacheck, but neither as waterproof. Given a choice, use Villaboard, but you should still line the surface with a waterproof membrane. Screed is installed before or after, what was not up to code?
