Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Mar 08, 2010 1:09 pm Hi Guys, Ive been a lurker on here for quite a while, but i guess its about time i showed you what ive been up to. We bought a 900m2 block of land on the south side of brisbane around 12 months ago, and set about finding a house to put on it. We decided that the most affordable way to get what we want for an acceptable price was to go owner builder. Additionally, my wife is a piano teacher, so we had some requirements that a project/display home just cant cater for. We found a company called Storybook cottages that fit the bill. Storybook specialize in developing packages for owner builders. They design the house, get it engineered and through council, provide materials to lockup and are there to offer general assistance and subcontractor help when required. That said, its not actually a kit home. All the framing etc is assembled on site by the chippies. We started in september last year, and have made pretty good progress so far. There have been a couple of slow periods, but im i hoping that we will be living in the house with 2 months. Anyway, I have set up a photo blog that captures what we have done to date. http://simonandrachshouse.posterous.com/ Let me know what you think so far Thanks Simon View our story on here in photo form: http://simonandrachshouse.posterous.com/ Re: Bout time i post in here. 2Mar 08, 2010 3:43 pm Hi Simon, great to see another lurker popping up! I love the storybook cottage website. They have some truely beautiful houses and if we'd built further out of town i would have loved to have gone for one of their designed. I've got several of the design facades saved on my computer to drool over. am about to rush over to your blog and check it out. Did you go with one of their designed and then modify? Re: Bout time i post in here. 7Mar 09, 2010 8:04 am i know what you mean when you say out of town.... we are in suburbia, and our house definitely stands out. Our street is a whole row of rendered brick homes, with ours at the end. Ours is the only one people stop in their cars to look at though hehe. Storybook dont have standard designs. Ours was designed for us mainly to meet my mrs requirements for teaching piano from home. Painting, sealing, filling nail holes etc etc. The main noticeable stuff is inside... Im also trying to get the garage finished so I can order the panel lift door to be installed. We have also selected a colour for the outside, and the Mrs picked up a tin of it today to start painting. Ill try and add some more photos to the blog soon. Loving the blue colour above the window Re: Bout time i post in here. 12Mar 16, 2010 9:21 am haha yeah... judging from the note they left on sanding disk, looks like they felt some remorse for the mug... Not sure why they wrote on the walls though. At least it means we have our rooms in the right spot if they can identify them hehe. Well the final date for our current rental lease is the 19th May.... which means we need to be gone by the 16th, so the place can be cleaned etc... That leaves just under 8 weeks.... still so much to do :p Ive got a fair bit of leave up my sleaves, so ill be taking a stack of that especially for painting, kitchen install and flooring. At what stage should i be getting the final inspection done? Ie. what can be left unfinished....? Photo from last week... Thats my mum in the back painting hehe.
