Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Feb 09, 2010 2:17 pm OK, we are close to finalising our concept plan, and will be passing it to our draftsman in the next few weeks. We have decided to go "owner builder". I am quite good at home renovation projects around the house, however I have never built a house before. What I an trying to understand is what jobs can I do myself, vs what jobs do I need to get a qualified tradesman to do. I was hoping someone could point me to a website or something where I can get this information. For example 1. I don't think I am allowed to run the internal telephone point wiring, but I can run the wiring for my TV aerial and home network 2. I don't think I am allowed to run the services (gas, water, electricity ...) from the collection point to the house, but I can dig the trenches in which these services will be laid. 3. I don't think I can "ruff in the plumbing", but I think I can install my own water tanks The house we are building is quite big, on an acre of land. The more of these kind of things I can do myself, the easier it will be on the budget. I expect the answer will vary from state to state, so info from people whom know about what is permissible in Victoria would be greatly appreciated. Re: VICTORIA - What I can do myself vs a qualified tradesman 2Feb 09, 2010 2:48 pm rotanon you'll require certificates of compliance for all plumbing, storm water, drainage & electrical works in order for you to get you certificate of occupancy. You may save some $$'s by digging trenches yourself to aid the run in of gas, power & water. But as for storm water & drainage going out, unless you follow the plans and directions from the plumbers involved, should anything happen down the track and it points to the trenches or fall of them you will be responsible (could be major $$$$'s to rectify) In VIC you either have to have solar hot water or a water tank installed, sometimes both depending on guidelines where you're building. But as you're building on acreage that wouldn't matter too much. However, if you opt for a water tank and it's plumbed to toilets & possibly laundry then you'll require one of the certificates of compliance from said plumber. Hope this has helped? Good luck and welcome to this forum.
