Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Feb 28, 2010 10:49 am Our steel frame supplier sent us the lintels that go above the windows and doors. However, our bricklayer said that they are not strong enough and that he is not happy using them. He has asked us to buy new ones.
I've managed to get some quotes but most of the lintels suppliers want to know the specifications and engineering calculations (???). So what I am wondering is, should we take our bricklayers word for it when he tells us which ones we need or should we follow the engineering recommendations? Re: Galvanised Lintels 2Feb 28, 2010 11:26 am Is what you were supplied with actually what the engineer recommended? Could that be what your bircklayer means - that they didnt supply you with the correct lintels? I personally would go with what the engineer recommended - it's his job to know whats required Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Lintels over a certain length (maybe check with your council building officer) should have associated engineering calculations proving they can withstand the necessary loads. The engineer that prepared our footing's report also did the lintel calculations for our garage (2.4m) and rear sliding stacker door (4.4m) openings. I think you would have had to provide this detail to council for them to approve your build. I'd be inclined to listen to the bricklayer for any narrower openings and look through your documentation for the engineering calculations for any wider openings. If your steel frame supplier did the lintel calculations and your bricklayer doesn't think they're strong enough you've got a problem. We are planning on using http://www.galintel.com.au/ which you can get through Bianco but I'm sure there are plenty of other options as well. Re: Cheapest place to get Galvanised Lintels from? 4Mar 02, 2010 7:25 pm theyetti We are planning on using http://www.galintel.com.au/ which you can get through Bianco but I'm sure there are plenty of other options as well. Thanks for that. I've managed to get quotes from 4 Galintel suppliers and Bianco have turned out to be the cheapest. The only thing is... two of those quotes are listing the lintels as 7mm thick and the other two are saying that 7mm doesnt exist and only comes in 6mm or 10mm :S So my question is. Do Galintels come in both 7mm and 6mm thicknesses? Re: Cheapest place to get Galvanised Lintels from? 5Mar 02, 2010 7:30 pm Hmmm... well according to their brochure angle lintels only come in 6mm and 10mm :S http://www.grahamgroup.com.au/pdf/galin ... intels.pdf Re: Cheapest place to get Galvanised Lintels from? 6Mar 03, 2010 12:47 pm stup question, but what is the thicnkess of the lintel you have now?? 6/7 mm is on the thin size and 8/10 is on the thicker side you for longer lengths or when you have manny courses of brick above it. Something to note also. A bricklayer may not knwo this however a ribbed 6mm lintel is just as strong as a 8mm none ribbed lintel. I will investigate further The lintels that our steel frame supplier sent us are just 1-2mm thick :S The thing is that none of these lintels were specified in the engineering plans... Were they supposed to be??? Like, all the structural steel lintels and beams were done by an engineer but not the ones that go on top of the windows Re: Cheapest place to get Galvanised Lintels from? 8Mar 03, 2010 1:08 pm hmmm lintels 1-2 thick is definatley an issue, and not not fit for placing bricks above. Engineers arent going to design the lintels for your house because every house would be the same. Instead your arcitech should have placed a table in the specifications section of you plans. Use a product like Equisol's Vitalise to clean the deck then coat with a penetrating timber oil. It will look 10 years younger and add value to your home. Visit for… 1 15912 Appreciate that Chippy.
