Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Jan 20, 2010 2:35 pm Our structural steel did not come pre-drilled (as they might not align correctly) and this will need to be done during installation. Among many beams, we have one huge 6.5m one that needs to sit on top of the posts. It will need to be lifted into position by either a crane or fork lift and then the holes will need to be drilled... Can anyone recommend the best way to go about doing this? And also, what machine would we need to get in order to drill these holes? Perhaps best to get a professional to drill the holes? (The steel frame and structural steel erector is reluctant to do any of this as he normally gets pre-drilled beams). We are thinking of having the beams positioned in the right place and then welding them to the posts as to keep them in place during drilling. Does this sound like a good idea? Most engineering companies should be able to do, whether they want to is another matter. Look for engineers - general in the yellow pages or steel fabricators. Re: How to drill holes through 15mm thick beam plates 3m above.. 6Jan 20, 2010 3:23 pm If it were me, I'd lift the beam up, mark the holes then lift it down to drill them...its much easier on the ground then floating around 3m up (trust me, i've done it plenty of times - including welding on the tip of a fishing boat derrick that had snapped off, bout 10m up in the air while the boat rolled around in a 2m swell, and it was raining). Also, i'd probably make a frame out of scaffold poles at each end and use a couple of chain blocks to lift the beam up rather than hiring a crane, but as I said, I've done it a few times and wouldn't recommend someone do it unless they know what they are doing, as it could all end in tears.... I'm surprised your steel erector won't do it, its really not that difficult. Andy Re: How to drill holes through 15mm thick beam plates 3m above.. 7Jan 22, 2010 7:14 am The tip on the kennards drill is spot on. I have had to drill a few holes in big beams and just rang up the bloke who made the beams and he lent me the magnetic drill no worries, gave him a slab for his trouble. They are fairly heavy though and make sure you put a bit of solution on the bit to stop it heating up. Re: How to drill holes through 15mm thick beam plates 3m above.. 8Jan 22, 2010 8:28 pm We have installed house lots of structural steel. The only reason we bolt the beams to the posts is so we don't have to get the fabricator out to weld the joins. This is always an extra cost. If you have no holes there at the moment, our steel fabricator always said a welded join is stronger than a bolted one. Hope this helps. Cheers. Do you normally drill the holes on the ground or do you have the beam "in place" while drilling?
