If you enter the black economy in the building industry then you are taking a huge risk as the other poster said in terms of warranty. You may save some short term money but pay in the long term and with cash you have zero recourse as there is no paper trail if things go wrong. It is simply not worth it from our perspective as it is the business owner that takes the most of the risk - as they only take cash in order to avoid paying tax and the consequences are huge for this. Builders are people too.... Re: Do you get discounts for cash anymore?? 6Jan 18, 2010 8:58 pm Why assume a cash sale is *? (I agreed some/many may not be declared as income) Many profitable businesses go bust due to poor cash flow (not lack of profit on jobs), so the offer of cash is often appealing as it allows them to pay off their accounts/creditors quickly and there is no question of cheques bouncing or customers paying late. When I pay in cash (most of my build has been cash) I still ask for a written receipt. It is up to the business if they want to declare the income or not, and this is out of my control. At the end of the day word of mouth plays a big part in a tradies survival, (look at the number of posts on this forum looking for people to do work) and cash jobs or not, poor work is a good way to go out of business when referrals dry up or you get a reputation for poor quality work and poor after sales backup/repairs. Re: Do you get discounts for cash anymore?? 7Jan 19, 2010 6:05 am Good point, cash is OK so long as there is a paper trail. This is especially important for Owner Builders as most are already at a disadvantage in technical knowledge and this can easily be exploited and they end up being ripped off. Cash payments without a paper trail are even more risky for Owner Builders than they are for the rest of us. To be safe, a written quote with an acceptance and/or purchase order then followed up with a tax invoice by the contractor is the paper trail. For a cash payment they can do what they want with it but at least you have some recourse if things go wrong. Builders are people too.... Re: Do you get discounts for cash anymore?? 8Feb 12, 2010 4:58 pm Yeh . People do. I got my Termite treatment at the Reno house done today . Every quote I got was $2500 . So I went with the one that actually spent time going over my house . At the end of the day he was abit edgy and dropped that he had been stiffed on numerous times by people not paying 100% on completion . I paid cash and he gave me $300 off without me asking for it. The guys did a fantastic job (would recommend them to anybody) and thats just an example . The Reno I did last year I consistantly saved 5-10% on many services by paying cash . The Electrician I'm using charges less for cash . The plumber I used before(& hope to use again) did the same . Alot depends on how you talk to people and establishing a professional rapport helps . Re: Do you get discounts for cash anymore?? 10Feb 12, 2010 9:06 pm I think it's a case of some do & some don't, really you can only ask and they say it's no cheaper. A friend of ours is a plumber and basically his set up is you buy all the fittings yourself and he charges an hourly labour rate, hence he has a suitcase full of money under his bed ____________________________ Bec ____________________________ Building our Balinese Resort Inspired Dream Home Blog ~ http://hagarshouse.blogspot.com/ Re: Do you get discounts for cash anymore?? 11Feb 12, 2010 9:11 pm Hills Guy Why assume a cash sale is *? Is there any shading (eaves or trees)? If the sun hits a window directly it doesn't matter too much if it's double or single… 1 12662 9 24789 Congratulations!
