Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Dec 16, 2009 6:24 pm Hi Everyone! Well I never thought I would be on this part of the forum........ we have been through the whole range of options from KDRB, to private builder, to a reno/extension with a builder and now to OB for reno/extension on our one storey. We have some contacts with trades........... Dad is a plumber, we know licensed sparkies and we also know some licensed builders as well. We have been advised to go OB so that we can control the cost a little bit and also what we want to do and when. We will be moving out of the house and will be living over 40 minutes away so I am nervous about how it is going to work. My husband is happy to do the test to get the licence and permit, but I think the truth will be more like me doing everything behind the scenes while he is at work. We are still getting some plans done, but I was wondering if anyone had any comments about how obvious and stupid this may be since neither of us are in a trade. Cheers! ML Re: Should we be looking at OB? 2Dec 23, 2009 8:14 am Hi there, We had no real building experience before we started, I did a bit of research by buying o/b books, using this resource, asking questions from trades etc and bit the bullet and started and haven't looked back. Sure you have a few set backs but so do professional builders. The one tip i could give is get a good chippie, as they sort and can handle the majority of the process. The other advantage is if you get a good one and they like working for you they hook you up with all the other trades and i have found the ones they use or recommend do a really good job as you have been recommended to them. The whole process is pretty straight forward and there is an order or everything, there are a few posts already on here that explain it pretty well. Just make sure you shop around for a few different quotes they vary in price a heap. good luck Re: Should we be looking at OB? 3Dec 23, 2009 1:41 pm My advice would be to see if you would be able to get the finances for it first Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated!
