Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Dec 14, 2009 11:34 am Hi Guys, Just wondering if anyone has done the profile peg setout for the Site Cut/Fill? I've got a pretty large (50m long, 20m deep) pad to construct, and before getting the drott onsite, I'd like to get some profile pegs in place, and stand back to take a look at the "final" contours etc... I've got a full site layout, with the extents of the cut and fills... (About 1.5 cut and 1.5 fill) I know the FSL's... I know the Batter Slopes required... I know the final grades away from the house site... I've got access to a dumpy or laser level... I'd just like to be able to put pegs in once... And have them right for the drott without reworking them later! Obviosuly I'm gonna need heaps of pegs, and flagging tape... But where do I put them!! Do I put them on the topside of the cut line... On the cut line, or offset by 500mm? Do I put them on the bottom side of the fill ine... Or offset by 500mm? How do I indicate FSL? Do these pegs get buried? Or are they offset by 500mm? I'd like to be able to get the drott operator in, and have him impressed by the layout, and know he doesn't have to gin around with a dumpy level to put pegs in place! Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Re: Site Cut/Fill Setout - DIY Assistance!! 2Dec 18, 2009 10:14 am A couple of points: -You probably have the best intentions at heart here, but why would you try tell the site works contractor how to suck eggs? This is what these guys do on a daily basis, why would you try to reinvent the wheel for them, you might end up confusing and protracting the whole process. Let them just get on with it. -Why would you assume all this civil works responsibilty, these guys are the experts and have the obligation to fill and cut as per the information supplied (site surveys / architecturals / Engineering drawings), if they get it wrong...they have the responsibily to fix it...if you get it wrong...you have to fix it. Careful now - Just a thought. Pat. Careful now - Just a thought. Pat. I guess you miss the point of it all.. Of being an owner builder!! Of accepting responsibility.. Of researching the project! I'm not trying to tell the site works contractor how to suck eggs at all... I'm trying to get an understanding of how to do it, and how to do it right so that it doesn't have to be done again! I'm doing it early so that I can stand back and take a look at what the extents will be onsite, and then bring in the drott! Assuming responsibility is what being an owner builder is all about... I certainly wouldn't just let the drott guy put in pegs without me checking them! So why wouldn't I want to understand how to do it in the first place! Too many people, whether owner builder or not, don't assume responsibility... The lay blame when it all turns to sh*t! And it could have been well avoided by a little learning and understanding on their part! Pat, this'll get your back up then... I'm drafting my own house... Why? Because I want it done my way, I want it done right, and I want it done once! What's that means is that I've had to research alot, ask alot of questions, and give it a go! I've had it viewed a structural engineer, ready to sign off on the draft, who was extremely impressed with the detail! Framing companies have done takeoffs without question, and concrete companies given quotes... I've assumed responsibility! Becasue at the end of the day, it's my land, my house, my owner build! So, back to the original question, can any body provide some enlitlement on this? Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Re: Site Cut/Fill Setout - DIY Assistance!! 4Dec 21, 2009 9:53 am Your are a sensitive one. Im surprised you didnt do the structural engineering yourself as well!! A song is coming to mins as I write this..... 'Yes there were times I'm sure you knew When I bit off more than I could chew But through it all when there was doubt I ate it up and spit it out, I faced it all And I stood tall and did it my way' Good Luck, You may need it. Pat. Re: Site Cut/Fill Setout - DIY Assistance!! 5Dec 21, 2009 11:54 am Chuth, Sorry I can't help you with your question, AS2870 might have the answers in it and your library might have it, my local has all the standards online which is useful. I am curious about your drafting as I'm thinking of doing the same thing for a small extention. I don't want to pay big bucks for a full-on CAD package so do you have any recommendations for software? Or did you do it the old fashioned way with a drafting table and set squares? Now that brings back memories of my apprentice days... Andy Re: Site Cut/Fill Setout - DIY Assistance!! 6Dec 21, 2009 12:22 pm Also, you might find the books by Allan Staines useful, I've got the renovator one so it doesn't go into much detail about set out but he has written a book on house building so you might find answers in that. Andy Re: Site Cut/Fill Setout - DIY Assistance!! 7Dec 21, 2009 1:33 pm andy the pm Chuth, Sorry I can't help you with your question, AS2870 might have the answers in it and your library might have it, my local has all the standards online which is useful. Now that brings back memories of my apprentice days... Andy Andy, I'm lucky enough to have full access to Autocad, and subsequently drafting the house in 3D... Makes it much easier to visualise how it will look on the block... I'm sure there are other packages out there that are much simpler, and cheaper to use... AS2870 covers the slab design, and yeah I've used it for the engineering of the slab... I think I've got every AS possible that I need! Pat the draftie Im surprised you didnt do the structural engineering yourself as well!! Funny you should say that, because the Australian Standards and Building Code have come in very handy... I guess when you're designing, rather than drafting a house, you need to be fully aware of the material limitations... From earthworks in AS3798, to concrete slab design in AS2870, to AS3500 Plumbing and Drainage, to AS4055 Wind Loadings, to AS4440 Timber Roof Trusses, to AS4678 Retaining Structures, to AS1456 Wastewater Treatment, to AS1684 Timber Framed construction... The information is all out there, it's just taking the time to research... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Re: Site Cut/Fill Setout - DIY Assistance!! 8Dec 21, 2009 9:47 pm Hi Cluth & all, now i'm not going to try & stir anyone up - i'll just tell it as i see it ... i love to use profiles - i hate single pegs driven from lazers. But on all sites i've ever had or worked on, we never put profiles in until the site has been levelled. if ur site connects to a sewer thats really what establishes the MINIUM levels to get fall from ur toilets to sewer - its the only level that IMO really matters. to set up the cut & fill, firstly i would use single pegs/posts at the main extremities of the building with one level set accross the block which i'd call a datum level. the final required levels needed painted & ribbon flagged so these r easy to see clearly showing how much cut there is below the datum level at that point, or the actual level painted above datum at the fill sections. secondly i'd put in pegs/posts at the 4 boundies showing same as above. once thats in, then u know where to start putting in profile hurdles AFTER the site ahs been filled/leveled. hope this is somewhat near what ur looking at....cheers tony Re: Site Cut/Fill Setout - DIY Assistance!! 9Dec 22, 2009 7:32 am Thanks T&V, I'm ok with profiling/hurdling for a slab setout... That part's easy once the block is level! I'm lucky enough that I don't have any "minimum" level as I'm on a 5 acres block.... The house pad alone looks like being 50m x 25m cut/fill operation... The will be a 2m deep cut, and 1.5m fill though, so I want to get it fairly right for the drott operator... One thing I've noticed, as I'm sure you have T&V, is that as an Owner Builder, if you have done your research, have the job prepared, and are prepared to get involved, then tradies are much more helpful, accomodating, tend to produce a better result, and sometimes cheaper! I know in my job, if I'm dealing with someone who seems like they have an interest, who wants to learn, has high standards, and is willing to give it a go, then I tend to enjoy my job more and produce a better result! Hence being such a big operation, why I want to peg it out first, then stand back and take a "dreamy" look at the location, heights etc before finally nailing in the location on the site plan... I've got the luxury of time on my side so I can play with things a little to position the house as I want it! Being on 5 acres, and not having minimum levels means I can adjust "on-the-run" to when the drott is onsite... I'f I think we need more batter, then I can... I'm not going to have to export fill! Re: Site Cut/Fill Setout - DIY Assistance!! 10Dec 24, 2009 12:34 am Hi Chuth 77, IMO if u have 2m cut & 1.5m fill, i'd be having the "split" or "neutral ground" level at 1/2 way cross the pad. reason i say this is becos the 2m that u cut will compact to about 1.5m. if ur on 5 arcres, r u going to have septic tanks? cos again u do need to know the entry level to the tank to work out the minimum grade of sewer line. if u know all this then u r well on ur way. cheers tony. Re: Site Cut/Fill Setout - DIY Assistance!! 11Dec 28, 2009 4:39 pm You can installed profiles if you wish, but they will more than likely be in the way of the operator when he is trying to cut the site. what they generally do is put external pegs in 1 metre from the slab boundaries and cut then batter back. If you are adamant that you want to take control and do the profiles yourself then I would wait until after site cut Re: Site Cut/Fill Setout - DIY Assistance!! 12Dec 28, 2009 6:27 pm Yeah, I'm not worried after pputting in profile hurdles for a slab as yet... It's the cut and fill profiles that I want to get sorted.... Being that its a 2:1 slope cut, and fill batter, I know where these will start and stop, so I've pegged these out to begin with... I've set up some datum points for the cut finished level, and aprt from that I'll jsut wing it with the drott operator! Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! PM me your email. I have a build excavation calculator you can use based on your plans to double check what your builder is telling you.
