Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Oct 13, 2009 1:20 pm Hi everyone
I'm new to posting here but have been lurking for quite a while, this site has already been a great help! We (hubby and I) are going to OB our new house on our property in Dongara WA, we have built our previous two homes with project builders but this time we thought we'd try doing it ourselves. It definately won't be anything flash but as we spend most of our time outside I didn't want anthing too big to clean. The plan http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z118 ... an0008.jpg We live on a major highway so the house will be facing down towards the road although we will still be 130m away from it. I have planted heaps of tuarts because there aren't any large trees on the property, unfortunately next doors sheep have decimated 80% of them so will have to wait til autumn to plant more. Mmmm not happy. Where the house will be built http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z118 ... 120409.jpg Currently we are living in our caravan and shed, and have been since May, and am well and truly over it already. Not looking forward to Summer, that's for sure. At least we don't have to pay rent and will be living where we are building so I really shouldn't complain. Our humble abode http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z118 ... 270509.jpg Cheers, Shelly Re: New to OB'ing - are you serious??? 2Oct 13, 2009 3:08 pm Just got back from the council with...............our Building License!! Yep that's right, it took all of 1 day to be approved Very happy, very happy indeedy So I guess now all the hard work starts? Re: New to OB'ing - are you serious?? 3Oct 15, 2009 10:52 pm Hi Shelwin & welcome to the forum - nothing like a good old country shire to get things done - 1 day approval - fantastic!!! like the "humble abode" good size shed too....we lived on site when i did the o/b b4 this current one - nothing like it - walk out the door to look at building site anytime nite or day to get things right in ur mind - its a great way to build! like ur plan it will be a good o/b project to do, good straight lines down the spine of the house always works well. one little thing with ur plan i can't quite follow - how do u get thru from bed1 to kitchen? i can't quite work out what the double lines in the pantry corner between kitchen & lounge represents? its not a criticism just wondering......? other question what materials is it to be built of and which direction does it face - being in Dongra, don't skimp on insulation what u spend now will save $$$ in cooling (& less extent heating) over the buildings lifetime... good luck, look forward to following the progress - cheers tony Re: New to OB'ing - are you serious?? 4Oct 16, 2009 10:09 am congrats shelley look forward to your progress u will have fun trust me even the bad days are good when you get it right lol cheers shelley stay safe happy building Re: New to OB'ing - are you serious?? 5Oct 16, 2009 7:00 pm Hi fellow OB'ers! Tony - Living in the shed with 3 kids does my head in sometimes, would be easier if it were just DH and I, but it will be worth it (I just have to keep telling myself that!) Those double lines are a soffit, is that what they're called? I think it is, when the cornice goes across the top of the opening to separate the areas. If we decide later on to put a door there then it won't be too hard to do. Atm we will leave as is. The house will be wood framed, with a colorbond roof and weatherboard. We were going to clad the exterior of just the family room in stone, colorbond or limestone but hubby and I couldn't agree on the final finish, so weatherboard it is. It will be facing west down towards the highway, we were kind of restricted where it could go because we would have had to pay huge money to clear the site (lots of rock and wattles). I like the position it will be in, we'll be protected from the southerlys that howl up this way in summer and we'll have a lovely outlook. Insulation is sorted, I hate the heat so DH has already researched that matter Shelley - thankyou, I'm pretty excited about it, it shouldn't be too challenging because it's a pretty straight-foward type house. But then, we've never OB before so who knows... stay tuned hahaha! Re: New to OB'ing - it's been a while! 6Sep 20, 2010 11:16 am Dragging this up from the depths! Things are going slowwwwly. We have decided not to borrow any money from the bank and will save up for the different stages instead, which means it's going to take a long, long time. So, 11 months after my last post here is our progress... http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z118 ... 0829-1.jpg http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z118 ... G_1154.jpg http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z118 ... G_1159.jpg Yeah we've not done much, but hey you can't rush these things, right? At the moment we are trying to put the roof on but the wind has been against us lately, bit of a bugger when we only have the weekends to work on it.
