Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Sep 11, 2009 10:57 pm Hi can someone help please.. we have submitted plans to council for our extension (owner building).. they have come back to us to provide "the proposed method of moisture proofing the junction of the walls of the proposed addition with the brick cavity walls of the existing dwelling" ????? does anyone know what they are wanting us to tell them? Re: council query 2Sep 12, 2009 12:04 am hi hun sounds like your extension butts up against the exsisting brick wall leaving an area for water to build up what they want is what you are going to use to protect the old wall and new one against rising damp u need to talk to someone about damp proofing methods available to you then decide which one u are using then tell the council i could be wrong but it sounds like it gl stay safe happy building Re: council query 3Sep 12, 2009 1:59 pm The guys at the council are probably just wanting to know that you will have an expansion joint where old meets new (which will be caulked) or that you will be keying the new brickwork in. Won't have anything to do with rising damp as its a vertical joint unless you are building upwards? Normally a simple closed or open celled foam backing rod half the width of the joint deep, and a jointing compound 'gunned' in, and smoothed off with the depth of jointing being half the width deep. If this were 2 buildings it would need to be fire rated so would need fire rated control jointing A spec could be written up by a construction chemical company.
