Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Aug 28, 2009 10:52 am Well we have bought our block by the beach in northern Tassie and are still in the planning stage of our OB project. We have pretty much decided on a design and are now getting qoutes. We plan to use all steel frame and clad with colorbond (roof and walls) we like the look of all colorbond and I think it suits beachside houses. The floor will be slightly elevated in order to gain some height and make the most of the ocean veiws so I plan to use koppers logs for piers and hyspan bearers/joists. I was interested to hear from anyone that has built using all steel construction and if they are happy with it or not and if they'd do it again. Also was interested to know how people insulated with this type of construction (colorbond walling on steel stud). I was thinking of using either insulboard or aircell inbetween the cladding and stud then R2 pink batts in the frame work? Would this be enough? Also someone said because I am close to the beach I may need to use colorbond "Ultra" which is apparently more resisitant to corrosion? Has anyone else used this product? Apparently it is twice the cost of normal colorbond. Cheers, Roy. Re: By the beach OB project 2Aug 28, 2009 11:26 am hi congrats on becoming an ob i would also find out if the steel frame is gaureented against corrosion being near the ocean good luck hope all goes smoothly stay safe happy building Re: By the beach OB project 3Aug 29, 2009 2:52 am Hi Roy, can u be more specific " by the beach" ??? how many meters from waters edge? colorbond r very specific about how close u can be - ultra is expensive, but rusting cladding is more expense!!!! if ur closer than 500m i'd think twice about steel framing. trouble with s/frame is once ur covering is on u cant get in to do anything about corrosion. i'm about 6kms from ocean & i notice that "blue" steel framing on the shed which is 3 YO is starting corroding where metal has been cut! cheers tony Re: By the beach OB project 4Aug 29, 2009 11:00 am I reckon it would be no further than 500m from the high tide mark so yeah probably will need the ultra and maybe I will have to think twice about using steel I thought the blue stell framing was corrosion resistant? Re: By the beach OB project 5Aug 30, 2009 11:42 am Roy,
it's a No Brainer, the only steel you can use near the beach is stainless, any other wont be there in ten years, especially 500 metere from the king tide line............Timber, cheaper and more readily available is ideal. They even build boats out of the stuff...................stay tuned for more, Shaun

A carpenter will always prefer timber, because, guess what, to put up a steel frame you don't need a carpenter! We have put a steel frame up in a seaside suburb, although not quite as close to the sea as you. Check for my threads in this sub-forum for pictures. JB Re: By the beach OB project 7Sep 02, 2009 2:40 pm The framing I'm looking at using is "Trucore" by bluescope and they give a 50 year warranty as long as you are no closer than 300m from high tide line so I am going to borrow my mates range finder and get an accurate measurment. If it is over 300m I reckon I will go with the steel frame as the cost variation between steel and timber is quite large. DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair That laser level looks lovely! We bought one for less than a quarter of that price off eBay. It worked really well for us and it's still going now, five years later.
