Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Aug 11, 2009 10:39 am I was just wondering if anyone can tell me how much to rewire an entire house for electrical. We have a $5000 bill from the electrician, but the general wiring and fit was supposed to be included in the contract. They are saying the extra charge is for the heritage switches we've put in???? I thought it would cost about $5000 to do the entire house not just for the additional labour on the heritage switches? Our house is a 4 bedroom plus study, 2 storey californian bungalow house. Does anyone have any similar experience? cheers, Kym Re: how much to wire a house 2Aug 11, 2009 3:56 pm hi there, firstly im an electrician and your first up quote is a very good price, secondly heritage switches are a pain in the a#%E. A normal switch takes about 3 mins to fit off a heritage switch can take up to 1 hour, you have to drill out the wood and line it up exactly with the holes ect ect ect. Plain and simple i think it quite reasonable for your sparky to ask more as i certainly would, they are an extra in my books and obviously his. You should take this into account, heritage switches are not the norm and should be charged more to fit off. I guess what we have issue with is that the builder has already included re-wiring and wiring the whole house with downlights throughout and electrical and phone points etc. in the contract price. The $5000 is on top of that - does that still seem right? We're just trying to gauge if the builder is getting us to pay twice?? cheers, Kym Re: how much to wire a house 4Aug 11, 2009 7:23 pm I am so sorry, i obviously didn't read it properly, 5000 bucks on top for heritage switches is 65 hours of labour which is a week and a half for one man, that does seem quite extreme, maybe u can get them to itemise it a bit better, ie. break it down into hours and materials. i would say it prob would be about half labour and half materials, those switches are very very expensive. We already paid for somfy motors for the blinds. The quote above was purely for “pre-wiring” so the blinds company can install the motors and blinds.
