Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Jul 19, 2009 9:44 pm Hi all We've been getting quotes in the excess of $20,000 for the staircase. We are now thinking of doing it ourselves, in order to save some money. We are however planning on getting an engineer to work out all the calculations and dimensions. What do you guys think? Would you do it this way? Re: Anyone built their own staircase? 2Jul 20, 2009 8:00 am I built one off my front verandah with treated pine stringers and F27 blackbutt treads. Its fairly easy to work out yourself, you don't really need an engineer unless council requires it. We often supply stairs cut ready to assemble at work. We send the stringers with the specs to a staircase business who simply put the timber onto a CNC router and the computer does the rest. I made up a jig at home for my router and did it the hard way but it didn't take too long. Re: Anyone built their own staircase? 4Dec 28, 2009 3:45 pm Stairs and pitching roofs are the Carpenters domain and where they earn their trade. they are considered the trickiest part of the trade. In saying that it is doable, get your self a book on stair building and design. Then practice a few times before attempting the real thing. A straight set of stairs is pretty straight forward Also be aware there are requirements on maximum tread heights and a limit on the number of stairs before reaching a landing Re: Anyone built their own staircase? 6Dec 28, 2009 7:55 pm Hey getting there, My partners actually an ex stair builder, there are some rules and regulations u need to follow. What are you planning to build? You don't need engineer specs but ie if there are more than 18 steps there needs to be landing, your balastrade needs to be over 1mtr high, you gaps if your having open stairs cant be to wide (so things dont get stuck ie. babies heads). If you have any more questions his happy to try and answer them for you!! Staircases and sausages. Should thou wish to keep thy palate sweet for sausages, avert thine eyes from their crafting. 14 4591 Not sure if that works? I was told the issue is the headspace clearance requirement on step 4. My builder is proposing shifting the beam 310mm towards the kitchen...I'm… 2 2553 Hi Mofflepop, I would recommend finding a building designer to prepare plans, they should design to your specified budget. The benefit is you can tender the project out… 9 20413 |
