Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Jun 29, 2009 12:46 am I have been shown 2 types of lagging. They are the same except I think one is thicker. Its the rubber looking stuff. Is this the only option for lagging. I meanwhat is the best stuff to use? What is most common? Do you notice the difference if its not lagged at all? Any other help with this topic from you people would be great. As always thanks heaps. KW......... “It's just as unpleasant to get more than you bargain for as to get less” George Bernard Shaw. Re: Lagging of Hot water pipes. 3Jun 29, 2009 3:14 am HI KW - yes like o-a said i recon rubber tube is the go - thick as u can get & there r different diameters for different size pipe - make sure u get a "firm" fit. its also good to protect copper pipe thru concrete. when i do this i also run a fair bit of "gaffer" type tape where the rubber ends to keep it in place on the pipe.all my hot water lines r covered with it - particularly if u hook a heat exchange unit from tile fire (or the like) to a solar HWS i put on both entry & return pipes & in my old house this has worked a treat. cheers tony.. Re: Lagging of Hot water pipes. 4Jun 29, 2009 2:17 pm T&V Yes mate, I intend to do every mm of the pipe. My spec says lagging to exteral walls only. I spoke to a plumber he said a lot of the cheaper builder dont lag at all???? What to you think about that, can they get away with it and its not noticed? The tight fit is a good idea. Will also get the think stuff. You can get retro fit also with a split in it. The plumber said to do the roof myself with retrofit if its not inc. Just doing my bit to save the world ( more like saving a few bucks on the gas bill). The real reasion being we are on LPG and no insluation in this place makes it mega expencive to run, I mean what did they do in the old days. Thanks again for import allways good stuff. Re: Lagging of Hot water pipes. 7Jul 01, 2009 3:17 am I get a bit obsessive with my research sometimes. At least I will know what’s going on when the plumber is there. I have beer and other goodies ready to exchange for a few lagging favors. Lol. I had a look at some lagging today, it was done with thin white foam, and to me it looked a waist of time. The thickest black rubber is best and as you said wrap it in tape with some sisalation around it also. Our hot water unit is electric now and if we turn it off it stays hot to warm for about 30 hours because of the double lot of insulation I got put in it. The regulation says you must have a special UV resistant lagging for solar pipe that are outside or external, most don’t us it. It has a black plastic seal around it. I will be wrapping those pipes like Christmas presents. I don’t think I will go for one of those recirculation pumps. I will get a rain water tank instead and one tap for drinking water to the sink and you can use it to flush the toilet etc. There is a lot to consider in building a house and I think a lot of people find out later after it built. I’m also going to insulate some of the inside walls, say in the living area & sitting room. I don’t know if it cost effective, but if you have lived in an older home with no insulation you tend to want it more so. Cheers to all. Re: Lagging of Hot water pipes. 8Jul 03, 2009 2:38 am Hi KW, sorry i can't remember where ur up to with ur build (old timers memory probs) but i can't stress enough about insulation generally - put in as much as u can practically afford. cost of heating & cooling is going to skyrocket in coming years so the less u have to heat & cool the more u'll save.... over last 40 years i've seen housing go from no insulation to todays good thinking. good to get north orientation if u can, i've put good anticon under roof, good thick ceiling insulation in & while i built d/brick i put gyprock on walls instead of render and a thermo wall between garage & living area. with no heating in the house yet, just the above measures, we've been having 10 degree days lately & tradies r working in shirts inside!!! good luck Tony Re: Lagging of Hot water pipes. 9Jul 03, 2009 3:20 am T & V Good to hear we think alike. I agree do it now and save the costs in the future. Its no use having a nice home if it cost you heaps to live in it.
