Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Jun 23, 2009 2:17 am Hope you more experienced O.B. & tradespeople can help. I’ve got a few concerns about the hot water unit location. Been over the plan several times. I can put it on the garage or leave it on the bedroom. The garage is closer to the kitchen. The experts, water people, say its best to have your hot water closest to the kitchen. Where you will use small lots of water reguarlly. I spoke to the builder he said that’s OK can do it on the garage. But from the kitchen the pipes then go to the ensuit then to the bathroom then the laundry, over the other side of the house. Like there is no direct piping from the water heater to each room or tap. Is this the way it is now? Like a single pipe going round the home from the water heater to the last tap point supplying all points in between. So the water must travel, do a tour of the house to get to the laundry witch is the furthest point. If this is so it will travel from the heater 16 meter to ENS then 15meter to the laundry a total of 31 meters. Manufactures of the hot water unit say it takes approx. 1 sec. per meter of pipe. So it could take ½ minute or more to get hot water to the laundry. The waist water is the concern this can be up to 7 or 8 liters at a time. No exactly environment friendly. Can anyone tell me is this single pipe to all points is the norm with volume builders? Is it possible to have say, 2 lines of pipe servicing 2 areas of the home so the water goes a bit more direct to the point of use? hot water.jpg for forum.jpg What’s your thoughts on the above? Re: Waisting cold water. 2Jun 23, 2009 8:34 am i was told to keep it close to the bathroom due to increase in pressure. going by your plans it would make more sense to run 1 pipe down the left hand side then another seperate pipe to the kitchen by the way nice plans stay safe happy building Re: Waisting cold water. 3Jun 23, 2009 9:23 am I don't know if this would help but we are getting a pump that when you press the button it circulates hot water through the pipes, so that when you turn on any tap it has hot water to it. I don't know if it works cause we are not in the house yet, but it really annoys me to waste the water waiting for it to heat up. It cost us around $700 I think & that probably has the builders mark up on it. We now have a blog. http://allaboutthebuild.blogspot.com/ Re: Waisting cold water. 4Jun 23, 2009 11:46 am I think it is called a hot water ringmain Danma Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Waisting cold water. 5Jun 23, 2009 12:31 pm We looked at getting one of these: http://www.ecosmart.com.au/water_guardian.html Think it was around the $1000 mark though, so we thought we'd see how it went and if we were wasting a lot of water then we'd get something, maybe not this one, but something similar. Apparently its nice and easy to stick on in later on if its needed. On our place anyway. Its one of my pet hates too, having the cold water running while waiting for the hot to come through. I can’t see the sense in letting all that good water go down the sink waiting to rinse a coffee mug. You can waist 2 or 3 liters of cold just to use 1 or 2 cups of hot water. The latest news is if I shift the water heater and want a separate line from the heater to the back of the house it’s possible but it will cost me extra. The other thing sounds interesting; most companies have them for their systems. How does it work? Do you have to put one at every hot water point or just one in the pipe line? I know Reem have one on their site. The position of the unit is most important; I will be doing more home work on this topic. I’m not a tight a## but I would rather water the trees than see it go down the sink at my cost. Please anyone who gets more info on the matter keep us all in the know. Re: Waisting cold water. 7Jun 24, 2009 10:12 am Apparently that ecosmart one you just need one unit. It goes close to the furthest hot water tap from the hot water system. I think it just recirculates the water coming to the hot tap till its hot, then sends it to the tap. That's all I know about it at the moment. Cheers, Pete viewtopic.php?f=38&t=8824 Re: Waisting cold water. 8Jun 28, 2009 10:10 pm So are you seriously going to spend nearly $1000 just to save some water? In my opinion, this is madness. I looked at these pumps a few months back, just before the dollar crapped itself, they were around $600, now that same pump has gone up to nearly $1000. The one I looked up was on all the time, it wasn't user activated (on demand). The company were quick to tell me how cheap the pump was to run (about $10 per year) but weren't so quick to answer how much gas the system would use to keep the water hot in the pipes. It seems to me that water is probably a lot cheaper than gas, so until the companies selling the pumps get a reality check, I think I'll let the tap run for a bit. Re: Waisting cold water. 10Jun 28, 2009 11:34 pm http://www.carhil.com.au/store/ Go to the above site. Around $600 for the pump only. With timer that allows you to set it for when ever. Not sure what the cost of the waist water would be. I say it would be cheaper to let the tap run. Not an economical solution. Just a time thing. I think the money is better spent on a tank.
