Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Jun 04, 2009 11:48 am Hi All, a few parts of WA r getting a bit of rain ATM & some on east coast saying same, if u've just had roof cladding done & haven't got ur ceilings in, now when it raining reasonably hard is a very good time to get up inside the roof and check for leaks. with new undersheet insulation & anticons, it gets very hard to find leaks, i suggest u physically get up on a ladder & check where any under roof material ends (usually near outside wall cavity) and both look & feel the bottom edge of that sheeting for any moisture - very hard to do when ceilings r in. particularly check where valleys r in the roof or where one valley runs into another, changing direction of water fllow on a roof is often where any problems will arise. if u don't do it & the first time u find a leak is when ceiling starts to stain u have a lot more expensive correction to make! just a suggestion - we all hope roof won't leak....i've noticed lately that many roof contractors on project homes don't "feather" or "weather" the ridge capping - may not be required under these amazing AB standards? i can assure u mine is & more..... cheers tony Re: New Roof Cladding & Rain 2Jun 04, 2009 1:16 pm And if it's not raining when the roof is completed... Get the hose up there! I'd also get put into the contract that all roof capping etc is scribed! Yes, amazingly it's not required under the BCA! Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! LaFond-Lewis Re: New Roof Cladding & Rain 4Jun 04, 2009 10:23 pm Hi Nina, where 2 roof pitches meet each other they r "capped" with a piece of "ridge cap" (2 flat sides with rounded centre) in the old days (& today for me) we always tapped the flat edge of the ridge cap back down the "corrugation". u really need a pic to see this & u know me "hopeless" if u look at the pics Kez posted up 4 me last weekend on our build "Our last o/b & still great fun" & copy the 2nd & 3rd last pic of ours taken from frony looking up at our garage & play around with PC to enlarge one of those pics u might see how the ridge cap has been tapped down into the corrugations. if u do this use a rubber hammer so as not to take paint off the ridge cap. yes u can certainly solve leaks - ur roofers will know how - no matter how good u do a roof theres often a leak or so - can be as simple as a teck screw not being put in straight - trick is to find them & b4 the ceiling goes in is the time to do it. another time is when solar H/w goes on roof. don't stress Nina just b aware & be vigilant while theres rain about & as cluth77 says after its fixed get DH up there & flood it with hose to check it out - most roofers will do this anyway. it gets very hard to find leaks now becos of under roof insulation. again don't stress b aware - i spent about 3 hours up in my ceiling today as it bucketed down - unfortunately i've got ceiling in now & if u could see the size of my middle u'd realise how hard this is 4 me, but it gives me more confidence when i lie in bed at night listening to the rain cheers tony Re: New Roof Cladding & Rain 5Jun 04, 2009 10:41 pm hi Tony thank you very much for your reply i just spoke to my DH about your message and he reassured me that we the ridgesare indeed tapped into the roof sheets' groves. so it's good apparently one of the leaks was due to the fact that our plumber did not install the flashing around the flume and the other one is for some other reason, not sure now that they fixed whatever they needed to fix, tomorrow we will go to the block and flood the roof to make sure there is nothing else to worry about. thanks again, you have given me some comfort nina "The fearless are merely fearless.
