Many trades will have a license or something similar. For example, I am a carpet cleaning technician. There are formal qualifications that I (and others) have. Although carpet cleaning is an unregulated industry, many of the more professional carpet cleaners have joined associations that are dedicated to the advancement of the industry, with a code of ethics, and checks to ensure that members offer a quality service. See http://www.agccwa.com.au We have a minimum of Certificate II (PRM20604) which is a national qualification, must have insurances, police clearances and abide by the group's standards. There are other associations and organisations such as NUCCA and Woolsafe. Many manufacturer's direct customers to such associations, as members are regarded as far more professional than an untrained, unqualified carpet cleaner. A quick search will often locate similar associations for other trades. This often means that if a tradie that is a member does the wrong thing, you can go to the association to get them to put wind up them. Ash.
