Hammerhead Didn't know they existed....... Ditto that! But I've spent a total of about $80 at bunnings so far so not sure it would be much help. Shame about the condition on no paint or powertools etc. My old man would probably make me sign up for one just to replace all the tools in the workshop hehe Re: Bunnings Owner builders card. What discount?? 4May 26, 2009 8:04 pm Not on paint??! That's one of the things I haven't bought.... Still, I know there are heaps of things left that I will need, that hopefully I can get discount on. Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: Bunnings Owner builders card. What discount?? 5May 26, 2009 8:39 pm We've got a bunnings account and we get 5% discount. I still try to avoid the place as things can be bought elsewhere much cheaper. I have to admit it is the best place to go when you need a few of those and some of that and this that and the other. Saves driving all over to save a few bucks. Still feel dirty when i buy stuff from there though Re: Bunnings Owner builders card. What discount?? 7May 26, 2009 10:50 pm Hi all, i just typed up a big detail post & lost it with big fingers hitting wrong button anyway in very brief detail now :- o/b card is very limited i've threw mine away. suggest u get a good sized list of materials together, take it to trade desk & ask for quotes on listed items. the bigger the list the better u'll do. once ur over $1,000 u do better. on a lot of bulk brand name items they have huge buying power - hardiflex, stormwater, insulation, plaster board ( watch what ur buying here) sealants & chalking, metal door frames, plain skin doors, basic plumbing (plain toilet bowls & cystens) basic electrical and definately big orders of paint!! while u might spend a few lots of $1,000 tradies do this every week & they get better dicounts - its all about volume. some tradies will buy & pass on to u - some don't. i found that it pays to get know to 1 or 2 staff on the trade desk, after they see u a few times with big orders, & got to know me i could get 10% on some smaller purchases. it pays to be nice & pleasant & ask for their advice even if u don't need it - everyone like to feel wanted cheers tony Re: Bunnings Owner builders card. What discount?? 8May 27, 2009 7:34 pm I have a Bunnings OB card. It doesn't seem to follow any pattern. Sometimes I spend $30 and get $5 off. Sometimes I spend $300 and get $1 off! The point is, I know I'm going to be using Bunnings for buying "bits" so I may as well get a discount. Bulk purchases are always bought elsewhere. JB Re: Bunnings Owner builders card. What discount?? 9May 28, 2009 12:45 am Hi J B, over this side of Oz there aren't too many "bulk suppliers" to choose from & Bunnings has big strangle hold on building retail market & they also have the volume to negotiate very competitve freight rates where distance is concerned & theres a fair bit of distance around WA!. quite a few builders use them & for us in the bush their "special orders" dept is very handy. several times now i've rung Perth suppliers & got quotes (plus freight), then gone to b's & got same product from same perth supplier cheaper thru B's special orders. again u must use trade desk for final pricing. one of the largest frame manufacturers in this region buy their pine thru B's, when i asked why they did this the manager said that B's buying power was so great that financially it was better for them to be a big client of B's than to be a small client of an Aust wide timber wholesaler. he also gave me a few tips on how best to buy thu B's & its worked well for me. other local smaller building retailers r more expensive to start with & can't/won't give much in discount - they try to compete by offering free deliver & such. now & again i have a good find in unlikely places like transport company selling pallets of bagged cement at big savings! a joinery works that imports good quality timber in long lengths. i guess thats what frustrates me a bit as an o/ber - it takes a while to find these places, if u were building all the time u'd know about them..... cheers tony Re: Bunnings Owner builders card. What discount?? 10May 28, 2009 10:12 am My two cents on Bunnings... Yes, its cheap. Yes, it has pretty much everything under one roof. Yes, its handy for those bits and bobs. Yes, there always one around the corner. But.... No, they are run by school kids..who dont care, clockwatch, and dont have a clue about construction. No, they poorly store the products, timber left out in the rain etc, selling products well past their sell by date etc. No, they hire equipment out with no instruction, or caution to safety operations. My experience has been that Mitre 10 seem to employ a more educated breed of employee who usually are egar to help, do have an understanding of construction, do care...and usually their prices are just as competetive as Bunnings. Just a thought. Pat. (PS - I dont have shares in Mitre 10...really) Re: Bunnings Owner builders card. Amazing how it starts to add up when you take freight into account even without trying to go over large distances. Re: Bunnings Owner builders card. If that is the case, shouldn't they be cheaper for, well, everything? As long as you are willing to do the leg work I guess... There is one clause thats states no trade prices. Re: Bunnings Owner builders card. What discount?? 15Jun 08, 2009 7:06 pm I find the 5% discount not worth the effort, better to shop around for the same product and make use of the bunnings 'match & beat by 10%' policy hardiplank was something like $15.75 for a 4.2m x 230mm at bunnings same size was $14.50 at kilsyth bargain bazaar. the 'bunnings kid' tried to not have to match the price, but I was a little persistant and got 45 lengths for $13 per length, about $125 saving as for returns, sometimes you need to stand your ground, the staff will try and put one over on you if they can. bought an Ozito belt sander, 3 year warranty, had it for a couple of months and, in fairness, did a fair bit of sanding with it, the 'blower' was not extracting the dust as good as it did when I bought it, took it back (with receipt) and after some stern words & almost heated discussion with the 'bunnings kid' I got my money refunded, bought a Ryobi i like bunnings sometimes Re: Bunnings Owner builders card. What discount?? 16Jul 24, 2009 2:42 pm I had one when I was OBing. I only brought odds and sods from them as most items were required in quantity and were obtained by getting quotes from B and other suppliers. It was a waste time and energy to take the card out of the wallet. Re: Bunnings Owner builders card. What discount?? 17Feb 21, 2010 6:22 pm Ugggh. We've spent so much money in Bunnings recently but here in SA you don't need an licence to be an OB. They only give discount to trade accounts Re: Bunnings Owner builders card. What discount?? 18Mar 03, 2010 8:17 am We recently got 5% off laser level & drill set. $20 is better than nothing. "A dream you dream alone is only a dream. What discount?? 19Mar 13, 2010 1:06 am I had one at the start of my ob and found that it depended on what you got, I got 15% off plumbing supplies but only 5% lights and 10% on timber but none on fasteners. I found the best way was to set up accounts with other specific companies and get 10% on whatever they sell and alot of the time it's a better quality. My Owner still Building thread viewtopic.php?t=9026 Re: Bunnings Owner builders card. What discount?? 20Mar 13, 2010 4:20 pm I have a Bunnings OB card also, and like others it seems to be totally random the amount of discount you get. I also agree with what others have posted about taking advantage of Bunnings massive buying power - just this week I ordered 10 pallets of Hebel blocks through Bunnings at a price thousands of dollars cheaper than it would have cost going through CSR's sole local distributor (at least in the Brisbane south-side area), who seem to have a monolopy stranglehold on the Hebel market. When I originally placed my order with special orders desk I showed my OB card and so the order went through as a trade order. If you play it smart you can save a lot of money by using Bunnings for the appropriate purchases.
