Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 May 20, 2009 1:22 pm Heres hoping someone can help me, as you can imagine the council have not been a big help. We are building a 78 square Kit Home in Legana, Tasmania which is zoned under the West Tamar Council. It is raised with yellow tounged flooring. We are required to either close off this area then provide subloor ventilation or alternatively insulate the flooring. As we have temporarily found $$ hard to come by were looking at the cheapest options to insulate the flooring. We have nearly 15 pink batt bags left over from insulating walls so we could use them then cover over with chicken wire? Any suggestions? I also saw at bunnings SilverFloor Foil rolls. Does anyone know if this is sufficient to pass councils approval? I know each council may have different guidelines but I would truly appreciate any opinions or comments! Thanks guys/gals Jason Re: Floor Insulation 2May 20, 2009 6:24 pm confused_legana Heres hoping someone can help me, as you can imagine the council have not been a big help. Thanks guys/gals Jason Some options include - foilboard, aircell, masterfloor. Do a web search on those products, hopefully you can find someone who supplies them in TAS. You are building a very big house so I suspect you may have to spend some $$$ somewhere! JB Re: Floor Insulation 4May 20, 2009 7:35 pm If you don't need the 15 bags sell them on eBay, or try here under 'Classifieds'. We have used the silver foil under red tongue, & our height off the ground is approx 600mm. Council have been happy with this & passed it OK. Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: Floor Insulation 5May 21, 2009 7:10 pm You can get proper under floor insulation designed to be fixed between 450mm centres. It comes in a 10 metre roll from memory, it looks similar to anti-con Re: Floor Insulation 6May 22, 2009 1:45 pm Thank you all for your help! I have now spoken with the council and shown them the foil and they are happy with it as it carries a R.3.0 rating and their minimum requirement is R1.0. Appreciate the help, and yes the kit home people ordered to many bags, I will check out the classified section on here and see what I can get for them! Re: Floor Insulation 7May 22, 2009 1:56 pm If you want to save costs, & as you already have Pink Batts left over.... use them 1st. If they are ceiling batts (likely R3.8 in Tassie) you can in theory split them into 2 batts. That is, carefully prise them apart into 2 thinner batts and double the coverage. These batts are perfect for underfloor insulation (just not as convenient as the purpose cut 430mm rolls of underfloor insulation). You will still need to cut the batts in width to fit between the joists. Re: Floor Insulation 8May 22, 2009 2:13 pm hi rubber, yes you are right. I have thought about putting the batts in aswell as the foil, the more insulation you have the better it is, especially in Legana! Thank you for your reply! Every bit of help counts! Re: Floor Insulation 9May 28, 2009 10:27 pm Don't use the fat batts. You will get vermin infestation. Foilboard, concertina foil batts expol, masterwall, or just air cell reflective blanket are good, but you could also use insulfoam, spray on polyurethane expanding foam. Re: Floor Insulation 10May 29, 2009 10:24 am So that Concertina stuff is ok then? We were supplied that with our kit and were wondering if it was the best thing to use. I like the look of the Foilboard but not sure what that would cost us yet. Provides a reflective airspace, easy to install. Does allow more air flow than other types of insulation (so better in hot climate than cold). Cost of foilboard / expol batts / other polystyrene batts about $10 / m2, self install.
