Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Apr 22, 2009 8:22 pm We have been debating about putting up the plasterboard ourselves & having it set professionally vs. just getting someone in to do it all, as ATM we are fairly time poor. Our home is a 3 bed (WIR in all rooms), open plan kitchen-lounge-dining, with lots of cupboards; and our first quote has come in: For supply, fixing & setting of plasterboard. 13mm ceilings 10mm walls 6mm villaboard WR board to laundry Step cornice throughout back blocking to ceiling instaling insulwool to ceilings only TOTAL INCL. GST $16,250 Opinions, please. Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: Plasterboard Quote 5Apr 22, 2009 8:44 pm Why are you using 13mm on the ceilings? 10mm is available in 'ceiling strength' in all brands Re: Plasterboard Quote 6Apr 23, 2009 7:20 am House is approx 18m x 10m. Ceiling height is 2.7m, product is CSR, I believe. Have been advised that there is little price diff between the supaceil (10mm) & 13mm board. Plasterer prefers the 13mm as he says it is more rigid & has less flex. Most aren't keen on just doing the finish, because at the end of it, when you've pushed the screws in a little too far and after 6 months the plaster finish starts to dimple as the sheets drop... Who'll be the first to be blamed.... I'm not sure whether you have ever hung plasterboard, but it is a very simple job... If you have the right tools... Maybe you might get hold of a plasterer who is willing to use you as a labourer to keep costs down... He may then like cheques made out to Mr C ASH.... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Anyone else heard this? JB Re: Plasterboard Quote 9Apr 23, 2009 7:23 pm yep, includes finishing. I guess VB would be tougher & stand up to car doors being opened on it & the like, more than regular plasterboard. Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: Plasterboard Quote 10Apr 23, 2009 8:17 pm Most would simply use plasterboard - you could use normal 4.5mm fibro (cheaper) but I guess 6mm Villaboard or even 7.5mm Blueboard would be stronger. Re: Plasterboard Quote 12Apr 26, 2009 9:10 pm my plaster quotes ranged from 12.5k to 19.5k only cove cornice in qoutes.. and no installing of insulation nor the battens our house is 4 bed (wir x 1, bir x5) 2 bath... no idea really on how good your quote is, i guess it depends on the town, how busy tradies are, and how many are available (ie:how much choice you have)?? best bet get 3 quotes and compare them! (do it with every trade you get in) Re: Plasterboard Quote 13Apr 26, 2009 9:40 pm Hey guys, in order to compare quotes from one house to another you need to know how many square meters of plaster the house has. Any most builders will pay around $13 dollars a sqaure meter for plaster for standard cove cornice and WR to wet areas. Battons are extra Laser level battons are extra (battons on clips) Villa board is extra again. For an owner builder wanting a better job i would be looking at around $16 per square meter. By the way hanging plaster is cheap, not worth doing yourself in my opinion. I no people here that can hang for $2.50 per squaremeter of plaster. Re: Plasterboard Quote 17May 08, 2009 1:58 pm Hammerhead, cant see a problem with installing plasterboard urself, i you know how, if not, pay a plasterer for a day to get you started , and learn the finer points ,then finish installation yourself, then get him back to set and cove when your finished.. If you set controlled feed screw gun properly screws wont go in too far, we usually leave em out a tad then tighten by hand until they just under flush.. that's only if they gotta be set over.. Anyways ur plasterer can re screw if need be.. Yes, villa board does go in the wet rooms, and wr board behind the kitchen sink, its in the code. We put plasterboard in the garage , but its well up off the floor, if u wannna save money, line walls and ceilings with fibro urself... up to you.. hope iv been of some help Re: Plasterboard Quote 18May 08, 2009 11:43 pm Hi Hammerhead, b4 u compare too many prices, whats the cost of 180 sqm of insulwool & laying it in is worth something ??? i've just taken a rough estimate of taking insulation off & i recon ur price is OK for a good quality job, but i've certainly found quotes r keen ever week right now, so as Mrs M says get 2 more quotes to be sure! i've got a rotten raked ceiling which needs scaffold & is a pain to finish, i got 3 quotes & saw workmanship of all, then i chose the more expensive quote cos i recon he will do a very neat job in difficult conditions - hence i'm prepared to pay more. Thank you alexp79 and gommeqld for your advice, that's very helpful, thanks 3 7944 What we have done in a few theatres ( including my own) is run 2 layers of 13mm gyprock, but sounds insulation especially for the bass is really tricky as a lot of that… 4 2577 Plasterboard Gyprock is very popular as a reveal liner these days. You need to provide a way of supporting it, we use a modified timber reveal or bracket. You will be… 1 4763 |
