thanks Re: tiled or normal shower base pros and cons 2Mar 04, 2009 9:46 am This topic has come up before and always surprises me - in SA nearly all shower bases are tiled, it is just the norm, in fact I can't remember seeing any homes in which they are not. Re: tiled or normal shower base pros and cons 3Mar 04, 2009 9:57 am I've never had a tiled base before. I'm looking forward to one.
I find the polymarble ones scratch and look a little dirty after a while. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: tiled or normal shower base pros and cons 4Mar 04, 2009 10:00 am I'm getting deja vu, I swear I've read the exact same post from you before Helyn
Anyway, its not standard in Vic with many builders, was one of our very few must have upgrades. I cant see it being an issue with cleaning, either way, you'll have to clean a white polymarble base, or a tiled base with a bit of mortar (I'd be going with larger tiles so not so many morter lines!). Hope this helps. Check out the other thread re tiled shower bases cover exactly the same topic ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: tiled or normal shower base pros and cons 6Mar 04, 2009 12:28 pm Helyn Well, I've written over 2,000 of them, probably have repeated myself a few times This statement made me lol when coupled with your avatar Re: tiled or normal shower base pros and cons 7Mar 04, 2009 1:56 pm Hi Vivica,
Tile bases are definitely more popular in WA. We are having ours tiled. I read that shower bases sometimes crack, expand and wear out. If this happens to your tiles, I think it is much easier to fix. Is it normal tiles or non-slip shower ones ?. Building Upside down house in Wantirna VIC Current Stage: Procrastination... it's just all too hard.... Blog: http://thereluctantbuilder.blogspot.com/ Re: tiled or normal shower base pros and cons 9Mar 04, 2009 2:53 pm Ozkarnak, it is usually the same tiles that are on the bathroom floor, just continuing into the shower - as far as I know, any floor tiles can do it, up to you whether you do your wet areas in non slip tiles.
The grout looks the same throughout, not sure if anything gets done to it to allow for heavier water onload. Re: tiled or normal shower base pros and cons 10Mar 04, 2009 3:09 pm Just be careful if you have a monsoon shower, the grout will need replacing fairly often. This is due to big drops falling directly from the ceiling and they generate a bit of force when they go straight down and hit the floor. (advice from a bathroom renovator and licenced tiler who only does $40k+ renos)
Despite my soon to be father in laws advice, I'll be getting a monsoon shower with tiled floor....he can just come redo the grout every few months Stevep79 & Principessa Finished building Wisdom Homes Impression 33mkII in The Ponds, Sydney http://lilypadintheponds.blogspot.com Re: tiled or normal shower base pros and cons 11Mar 04, 2009 11:09 pm Hi All, i've had over 40 years of dealing with tiled shower floors, nothing tricky except make sure the shower area is "sunk" into the slab - only trouble i've had is a shower built on the slab with no indent - eventual cracking let water thru the wall. make sure grouting is done deep & properly, brickwork in the bathroom should ideally have had a "damp course" additive in motor. in extreme cases, u can get a jack hammer, chisel tiles off and replace. given a choise i wouldn't have any other floor, there r a number of tile & grout cleaning products about, & regrouting can be done if needed.

I think I am going to use a product called wetseal and would be interested to know if anyone had any other recommendations. Re: tiled or normal shower base pros and cons 14Apr 15, 2009 9:09 pm Interesting thread. I thought shower base was the norm but I guess I was wrong *subscribing* Re: tiled or normal shower base pros and cons 15Apr 22, 2009 8:36 pm I've been informed that it is more expensive to have a tiled shower base because it means that you need to get a custom made shower screen. HTH Re: tiled or normal shower base pros and cons 16Apr 22, 2009 9:06 pm In NSW we pretty much only have tiled shower bases. I thought it was strange that in Vic it was the exact opposite. I always think that preformed shower bases are more slippery then tiles. GettingThere - not sure about the shower screens. They never seem to be that expensive in my experience and you can actually buy DIY from Bunnings as well. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: tiled or normal shower base pros and cons 17Apr 29, 2009 6:17 pm Thanks for all your input everyone, i have gone with the tiled shower base, but was puzzled whether to use Porcelain tiles will this be too slippery? how will this compare from a shaower base?? It means it’s sunken into the slab, then angled into the centre drain. This will have a stegbar semi frameless screen. My concern is; with this type of shower set up what’s the chance of it not draining properly. How deep is the angle? Does the water ever escape under the shower screen bottom? Obviously if it’s built correctly it should be fine, but, I have spoken to a few people who have had problems. I suppose the main problems could be angle not steep enough. Tiles not level and screen not sitting flat on the tiles. The drain pipe, I think, must be 90mm at least to carry the water away. Is this correct, and do some builder use smaller PVC? I was thinking of sitting the screen up on a tiles barrier say 50 or 60 mm high and the same wide to hold any water that may stay in or on the tiled base. What are your thoughts on the above? Thanks & Regards to all. KW…….. “It's just as unpleasant to get more than you bargain for as to get less” George Bernard Shaw. Re: tiled or normal shower base pros and cons 20May 01, 2009 10:34 am This is how we've done ours. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We used compressed cement sheets on the floor instead of the partical board supplied. Plenty of waterproofing & poly matting, 1.2 wide so its one piece across the floor and up the wall. Our tiler said to use 32mm aluminium angle cause we've got fairly thick porcelain tiles (9-10mm thick). The drain is 90mm and then tapers lower into about 50mm. The aluminium angle comes up flush with the tiles and the screens sit over it. I think that's about it.
