Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Jan 18, 2009 11:32 pm I am getting a quote for the concrete slab. I have found out what is needed. Formwork, placing, finishing, steel mesh reinforcement, vapour barrier, concrete, concrete pumping.
At first, I was going to get all the various sub-contractors separately, i.e Formwork Subby to apply the steel mesh Concreter Then get quotes for the materials, and buy the materials myself. But, I though, why not get a quote with everything included in one. I did find such a company in Sydney which does everything, although they did say that they sub-contract the person for the formwork (I am aware that I will be paying for 2 markups instead of one for the formwork) They also said that they can purchase the materials and that will be included in the quote. I told them that I can purchase the materials, but they said that they get discounts that suppliers don't give to owner builders. But I thought, even if they get the discount, they probably would add a markup for the ordering + buying that they are doing anyway, therefore I won't see any difference in price. Am I right about this? So, comparing from me doing everything versus them doing everything, would the price difference be huge or small (say a thousand dollars) What do you think? These guys get big discounts, and I don't think you will be able to compete, even with his markup... Also, If you don't get enough material, who is going to cover you when it comes time.... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! My feeling is that in the end they roughly equal each other, which is why I prefer to get someone else to to the whole job.
The only advantage I see with doing more yourself is you have more ability to change things as you go along. If you get a builder to do everything you have to have everything worked out and well documented in advance. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Ask the council if there is a chance of getting build over easement exemption. Sometimes easements are unused and 24cm is not all that much. Good luck. And yes any builder… 2 13745 Hello needing some advice.
