Anybody knows of any chippies in Perth ??? I've never expected that it would be so hard to find someone. Most carpenters here don't do frames, those who do give impossible dates - March/April

have u thought about using a framing company to prefab wall & roof frames, deliver & errect? the reason i ask this is that i was very surprised to see a load of material delivered to my site from Bunnings. i thought with the reasonably large number of houses frames this lot build, the framing company would have huge buying power from wherever they liked - but not the case, they said it was better for them to be a big volume client of Bunnings than a smaller client of one of the big pine suppliers - starts to make u realise Bunnings buying power!!! anyway by me getting the framing company i've side stepped a lot of price hunting for timber, fasteners, brackets, stirups etc etc... just a thought! if ur interested in this i can recommend a company in Perth who a building friend of mine has used for years. cheers tony Re: Chippies in the West ??? 3Jan 17, 2009 5:33 pm I've paid the deposit to an outfit that gave me the best quality quote and price. They definitely don't get their stuff fr Bunnings, they manufacture prefab frames and trusses in their factory in Wangara, just as you're recommending. But they don't erect them. They gave me pointers to a couple of guys, who do that, I've sent them the plans, etc, for a quote, they haven't replied. I rang a few more outfits, they either can't do it before April or don't do frames at all.
Maybe I wasn't clear enough talking to them and they thought that I wanted putting together framing from scratch. All I need is to get someone to put it all together, prefab frames, steel columns and lintels and then trusses. Ah well, looks like we won't be able to move in before winter... That's how we found our chippie - and he is excellent! Bonus is we got to see his work up front as well!! Ruth -Bought house in Melbourne inner burbs, knocked it down & now...we are owner builders! Completed OB project and moved in to our new home with our new baby in May 2009! Re: Chippies in the West ??? 5Jan 17, 2009 11:13 pm hey chris we had same prob they either couldnt do it for ages or wanted a fortune so we brought nail gun & compressor and are doing it ourselves. ive just spoken to the frame company making our pre fab frames they are supplying all tie downs and bracings including the wood needed to brace the walls its all in the quote we thought we had to supply all the clips and extra wood. they are also giving us a detailed plan with the frames and trusses so we can follow it. the guy supplying it said we could do it as long as we follow his plans and if we get stuck his only a phone call away and happy to help with directions. just in case i went and took heaps of photos of other frames being errected and it looks pretty straight forward ours is totally wood and no steel but gives you something to think about if you get stuck. cheers shelley Re: Chippies in the West ??? 6Jan 18, 2009 9:57 am Ruth,
Quote: have you tried driving around housing estates Hi Shelley, I admire your courage in tackling DIY these big building jobs. I'm not as confident, a few things I've tried to do myself weren't a great success and one I managed to really stuff up. The frames're quite vital and I definitely want an expert to put them up for me. The old shack I'm living in now was poorly framed, with hideous consequences. I wish you all the luck in doing it yourself though. Judging by the piers and everything else you've done, you'll be right!
