Re: Any footing/slab/concrete recommendations in Adelaide? 2Jan 14, 2009 4:32 pm gettingThere We are about to start building our first home as owner builders and are just wondering if there are any recommendations for the footing/concrete stage Notoriously bad for movement. Reactive clay soils that expand and contract with moisture. Generally you need deeper footings but an engineer can determine this for you. Now that I have read about them, I think the post and beam construction system has a lot going for it in terms of stability. http://www.postbeam.com.au/index.php?op ... &Itemid=41 http://www.emilis.sa.on.net/e30_fram.htm Re: Any footing/slab/concrete recommendations in Adelaide? 3Jan 14, 2009 7:19 pm i would totally never ever recomend brick piers espeacially if you do them yourselves.if we had the money we would definately go with a slab time wise ease of construction definately the way to go.however if your site isnt level the the steel adjustable piers look good although not cheap but pretty easy to do if you get the lysaght adjustable ones gl Re: Any footing/slab/concrete recommendations in Adelaide? 4Jan 15, 2009 10:50 am Sorry about that. I didnt express myself properly the first time. We are going with the slab and the engineers have worked out how deep/thick etc the footings need to be and all that. I just need recommendations for someone to dig out the footings and poor the slab... If that makes sense Re: Any footing/slab/concrete recommendations in Adelaide? 6Jan 18, 2009 11:22 am Rod1949 So you're not an OB in the true meaning then. No, I guess not Both my partner and I have full time jobs and will only be able to work on our hous on the weekends. Instead of going through a building company we are going to take care of all the management stuff etc. Re: Any footing/slab/concrete recommendations in Adelaide? 7Jan 18, 2009 11:58 am Hi gettingthere - i admire all people who r prepared to "have a go" at any level of building whether u sub contract &/or do most or some bits urself, but be careful - owner builder is what it says - the owner is legally resposible as the "builder" & as such u r responsible for the build - NOT ur subies! if u & ur partner r both working - how can u be there to supervise what contractors r doing? if one is working the other partner can be there. IMO in ur situation, if this is ur first house i suggest u get a builder for this one, watch how it progresses, & do things like build ur own garage as a project, do the internal & external painting, landscaping - don't make this the house of ur dreams, make it ur leaning project. just a thought anyway & in any case good luck with whatever u try. cheers Tony Re: Any footing/slab/concrete recommendations in Adelaide? 8Jan 30, 2009 3:04 pm Hi there
Well done on making the decision to owner build, in whatever sense that may be (from doing all the work yourself to doing bits & pieces). I like you have also made the decision and am in a very similar position to you (full time work). A bit of encouragement, I have had two friends undertake similar projects (both with full time jobs) and depending on your personality type and drive, it is definitely achievable! We are due to lay our footings in late Feb/early March and like you are now on the lookout for an Adelaide metro based footings contractor. A collegue of mine (who use to project manage for a mid level development company) has given me the name of a footings contractor she swears by. I haven't yet contacted him so I can not personally give you a recommendation but happy to share the info if you like? I'm not sure about price but in my situation we have got a somewhat complex footings design and from what I have been told, this guy is our man. Let me know if you are still looking and/or if you have found anyone else you are getting quotes from. It would certainly be handy to exchange good contractors where possible. Cheers Re: Any footing/slab/concrete recommendations in Adelaide? 9Mar 14, 2009 6:32 pm TopAustralianDream Hi there Well done on making the decision to owner build, in whatever sense that may be (from doing all the work yourself to doing bits & pieces). I am always on a look out for more quotes yep sounds good make the footing bigger to to allow for the pipe in the middle 3 7320 PM me your email. I have a build excavation calculator you can use based on your plans to double check what your builder is telling you. Cheers Simeon 1 10243 I've dug some footings to embed a post anchor into. My holes are around 450mm deep which I'll put a 200mm stirrup into. The bottom of these holes seem firm enough. … 0 3316 |
