Sorry for the late reply, I just seen this. I have a military truck. It has about a 15 foot bed and I wanted to use a full 20ft box. I was thinking of using 2 I- beams down the sides and one down the center and then cross pieces about every 16 inches. I guess I'm confused why you would be adding that to the floor when the under side of a container already has a lot of structure in it. Here is a picture of the underside of a 40' container. 20's don't have that plate on the left side. To basically if you look to the right half of this floor, that is what a 20' would look like. It just has some forklift pockets added in. Are you looking to add to what is already there or take it out and add different structure in? So I would take out the existing supports and put in my own and if 5 feet are over hanging thats 25% of the empty weight that doesn't have support. That's over 1000lbs suspended in the air in a structure that can't support itself. So I'm going to take the old supports out and put in my own using I beams Re: Shipping container home 7Mar 08, 2022 2:13 am Hmmm, I'm not sure I can get behind taking out the entire existing support system of the floor for a new supports. At that point, why not just rebuild the container? I can see adding to what is there below the container to support it, but removing all of that will create a whole new set of problems. Are you planning on moving the truck around or keeping it in place? If it is in place, the extra height shouldn't be an issue. I would just make sure that first 15' is really well secured to the truck. If you are moving the truck around, you'll need to look at how much height you have to work with for adding on extra support under the floor. But, if you are planning on driving around with 5' hanging over the end of the trailer, be ready to be stopped fairly regularly if you are in the US. That is just a huge red flag of a DOT violation. You'd want to have that proactively checked over by someone in the state patrol and document that it is legal so you'd have the to pull out when you get stopped plus have their phone number handy for confirmation that it is OK. Back in my dispatch days, we had a couple of ways of loading our trucks that were on the line with DOT so we have state patrol come in and confirm it against DOT rules. The drivers always had that officer's number handy because they definitely needed it. Something that is clearly over the line will mean route stops. Re: Shipping container home 9Mar 08, 2022 2:33 am I would add them under the container. You probably can't use an I beam any more, but that might not have been what you needed in the first place. What height will the container be when it is sitting on the truck if you didn't do any mods at all? Once you have that measurement, you know how much room you have to play with before hitting the 13'6 (I'd recommend really not going that high but a little shorter). Then look at what options you have with that. If you want to talk about this offline, give me a call.
