Would you use an unbias owner builder consultant?

Hi everyone.

Just taking a quick survey on something I see as lacking in the market.

I'm about a quarter of the way through my owner builder project. Have learned heaps! But there have been times when I just wanted someone with experience to answer my questions, check the work and maybe give me some options.

All I could find were consultants in the industry who wanted to sell me something... be it materials, or a product or to use their trades people. There are even owner builder consultants who offer the whole package and will project manage the whole thing for you. Those packages are definitely costly.

What if you could just ask an experienced builder and project manager with 30 years experience all the questions and pay them an hourly rate to give you the straight facts and options available. What if you could get someone to come in and check on your tradesman work to make sure everything is being done correctly? Or double check your materials calculations etc.

And you only pay them hourly rates for this work. No contracts or packages etc. Just pay for the experience and advice you need so you can continue the project with confidence.

Is this something you would use?

there are only 2 building consultants that are licensed in general housing
Building Surveyors and Engineers, curious as to where you are going to fit in
when you are not licensed to deal with non-compliance and alternate solutions
LOL, Architects have already been pushed out of the Mass Market.

structuralBIMGuy - does that mean that only Building Surveyors and Engineers can offer advice? What about licensed builders?

If they are not signing off on anything (or designing anything) and only offering industry advice on best practice and guidance that comes from experience why would they need special licensing?

It seems there is a potential service to owner builders missing that would be quite helpful.

* Just a note - it's not something that I am looking to offer myself, but wondering why I can't find this type of consulting service.
Ask your Council building surveyor...they issue building licenses.
Imo, the Issue is not who offers the best advice/guidance but rather if a problem arises ie, non compliance who is best to sort it out before it becomes not fit for purpose, a pull down job or at worse dangerous.
BTW Builders and site supervisors are licensed in WA and you can hire both as an OB, but they will not override a Qualified Engineer and Building surveyor.
The process is there to protect you from sh0nky Builds
Cheers

There is a company like this Owner Builder Specialists https://ownerbuilderspecialists.com.au/
At the end of the day building a house is an individual thing. No builder or carpenter is across every product available, knows best use, design and how to best installent products. Even you holy engineers and architects. It's not like a car where 90% is the same as the last. If you think you need someone to manage the day to day, then just pay a builder to do your house.
So for me, as I am currently owner building, No.
