OB in SA

Very! It's mostly my partner's dad who is doing the brickwork in our house, a few days helped by partner's brother when he is not working on site for some reason. My partner hasn't really learned to lay bricks cause he's their labourer when they used to work together in jobs cos he's strong and quick. He never stops though. He will have mortar mixed and ready before his old man even gets there (his dad gets there at 7:30am, my partner starts at 7am), setup bricks to ensure that they will have a clear run and also will still keep working after they have left to setup scaffold and bricks again ready for the next morning.

Partner's parents' house is face bricks (double brick) almost the entire house. Ours will be gyprocked and rendered. It's a beautiful home. It is like federation style home while we are going for something that's modern and timeless hopefully. I guess the outside of our house might look like a homestead but hopefully we pick stuff for the inside that will not date. The parents' house has been built by the dad and his two boys, or at least the brickwork. I think that gives the house a sentimental value. Partner and I will do tiling, insulation and painting ourselves. We will try to do it in a certain order. So hopefully once everything else is done, we will paint the ceilings and walls and doors, do all tiling afterwards then the carpet to go last. Then kitchen and cabinetry.

Awww, that must be so awesome to have a childhood home.

I learn a lot from this forum. I will out of the blue just send an SMS to my partner asking about something that I got from here like did we consider this and that. He says I know more than them that have helped build heaps of houses. Haha! Though he said it, I probably get my questions from reading a thread of someone who's building in another state. And that I would send him a pic of something I got from here ie bricklaying that is not done that way here in SA at all.
